Attack vectors and security response

Earlier during the trading session, Bitcoin had reached a 24-hour high of $81,890 before a rapid selloff took hold, triggered by the news of the hack and the subsequent liquidation of millions in leveraged long positions.

Binance reported that an initial investigation pointed to a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop as the probable entry point. The attacker is believed to have accessed a service container and initiated unauthorized withdrawal transactions. Binance stated that there is no evidence of any wallet private key leak at this time.

Binance posted, “The estimated total impact sits at around 6.3B. We have worked with blockchain partners to freeze affected assets, with ~3 billion frozen on-chain so far. Binance will cover all losses from the SAFU fund and the company’s funds. User funds are safe. We will also publish an updated Proof of Reserves once the remediation is complete.”

The $6.3 billion figure surpasses earlier estimates, which ranged between $2.7 billion and $5.8 billion. According to Binance, approximately $3 billion worth of assets has already been frozen on-chain in cooperation with blockchain partners.

Mini dictionary: SAFU (Secure Asset Fund for Users) is an emergency insurance fund established by Binance in 2018 to protect user funds in case of unexpected security incidents.

Binance committed to releasing a detailed technical analysis once its ongoing investigation is complete and all facts have been verified.

The company stated that it would share a detailed technical post-mortem once the investigation concludes and verification is complete.

Freezes, asset recovery, and community involvement

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino reported that Tether, a major stablecoin issuer, has frozen more than 1.57 billion USDT connected to the incident, while Circle, another stablecoin provider, also froze USDC linked to the suspected attacker. Binance co-founder Yi He assured users via social media that user funds remain secure and all losses from the hack will be compensated by the platform.

Suspicion first arose after an observer noticed over $2.7 billion in digital assets, including Ethereum, USDT, and USDC, being moved from a Binance wallet to an external address under suspicious circumstances.

Aave, a decentralized lending protocol, reportedly froze several lending markets to prevent the attacker from borrowing against the stolen funds. Binance.US clarified that the incident does not impact its operations.

Binance has revoked authorization for the affected addresses and is coordinating with law enforcement to identify those responsible. Deposits and withdrawals remain suspended while security checks continue and affected assets are tracked down.

Ongoing investigation and market impact

Binance stated that there is currently no set timeline for publishing a full post-mortem of the event. The exchange is advising users to rely solely on official Binance channels for updates, while it continues efforts to freeze additional assets and support law enforcement investigations.

Binance was founded in 2017 and has since grown to become one of the leading global providers of cryptocurrency trading and services.

Changpeng Zhao, who previously served as Binance CEO and currently holds the role of shareholder, commented during the incident via X, “User funds are safe! It does look like a hack on Binance. Appreciate the quick freeze from Tether and Circle. I don’t manage Binance anymore, but as a shareholder, I expect all user funds will be fully covered.”

As news of the security breach spread, Bitcoin prices dropped sharply to $76,301, before recovering to around $77,800 later in the session.
