Bitcoin drops 7.3% in October, defying Uptober trend as ETF outflows grow

In Brief

  • 🚨 $BTC lost 7.3% in October, breaking its “Uptober” streak for the second year in a row.

  • 📉 Outflows from spot Bitcoin ETFs reached $515 million while Ether ETFs saw $1.61 billion withdrawn.

  • 📊 Historically bullish Octobers may matter less as institutional flows now shape $BTC’s price.

Bitcoin posted a 7.3% decline in October 2026, following a 4% drop in the same month last year, according to CoinGlass. These back-to-back losses have put the cryptocurrency’s long-held “Uptober” reputation under scrutiny, as seasonal optimism gives way to market uncertainty driven by changing investor dynamics and persistent economic concerns.

Shifting seasonal trends and muted volatility

Traditionally, October delivered the strongest median returns for Bitcoin, with an average gain of 15.4% and positive performance in 10 out of 13 years through 2025, according to Kaiko researcher Andrew Yang. However, the pattern broke in the past two Octobers, raising questions about the reliability of historical seasonal trends.

The weakening of September’s longstanding bearish reputation further highlights changing market behavior. Bitcoin has now posted gains in every September since 2023, a trend that, according to Yang, may reflect some traders’ efforts to front-run the expected October rally.

Yang also observed that Bitcoin’s month-to-month price fluctuations have narrowed in recent years. The digital asset’s typical monthly move has fallen from 14% between 2013 and 2016 to just 9.6% since 2024. “With less volatility, sharp seasonal rallies have become less pronounced,” Yang told Cointelegraph.

Bitcoin’s monthly price moves have narrowed significantly, making traditional seasonal patterns like Uptober less impactful compared to previous years, Kaiko’s Andrew Yang noted.

Institutional flows and macroeconomic drivers

Justin d’Anethan, head of research at Arctic Digital, identified institutional factors as increasingly important in shaping Bitcoin’s price trajectory. He pointed to exchange-traded fund (ETF) flows and corporate buyers, stating that their investment decisions are more influenced by liquidity, interest rates, and mandates than by seasonal narratives.

US spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced net outflows of $515 million in October, while spot Ether ETFs recorded an unprecedented $1.61 billion in withdrawals. These figures underscore the potential for significant market movement tied to institutional flows.

Yang suggested that the impact of spot Bitcoin ETFs remains difficult to evaluate due to their relatively short track record, having been approved only in January 2024. Even so, he stated that Bitcoin increasingly behaves like a macro asset, driven primarily by economic data and major investor activity, rather than the calendar.

CryptoAppsy’s real-time charts and live news monitoring offer traders an edge when tracking how ETF flows and shifts in institutional demand affect Bitcoin’s price. These features allow users to immediately spot emerging patterns and respond to large-scale withdrawals or inflows that may signal broader market changes, rather than relying solely on seasonal expectations.

Changing views on Uptober’s significance

While October’s losses have challenged the “Uptober” narrative, market participants are cautious about dismissing it completely. Julio Moreno, head of research at CryptoQuant, linked October’s performance to the prevailing market cycle, noting stronger returns during bull markets and weaker results in bear phases.

Moreno emphasized that spot demand dynamics play a greater role than cyclical calendar patterns in determining price action. “Price performance depends more on spot demand dynamics than cyclical patterns, and demand doesn’t care about the calendar,” he said.

Traders often anticipate seasonal rallies, leading to price movements before historical patterns would suggest, XYO’s Markus Levin observed.

Arctic Digital’s d’Anethan added that while Uptober has a basis in Bitcoin’s historical performance, like other seasonal indicators, it does not guarantee future gains and may fail in certain years.
