Bitcoin risks drop to $74,000 support after lower high, long-term outlook intact

In Brief

Bitcoin is trading close to $77,600 after pulling back from above $80,000, signaling a heightened debate among traders over potential short-term weakness versus an overall constructive long-term trend. The latest technical outlook indicates that the immediate battle between bulls and bears is unfolding around key support and resistance levels, shaping the cryptocurrency’s direction in the coming days.

Short-Term Chart Signals Risk of Deeper Decline

On the four-hour chart, Bitcoin has formed a lower high beneath a descending trendline, highlighting a loss of buying momentum and placing pressure on the immediate support near $77,000. Market analysis shows Bitcoin trading near $77,700 after failing to extend its advance above the $80,000–$81,000 region, with price action suggesting that sellers are gaining temporary control.

Jesse Olson, a crypto market analyst, pointed to the importance of the green support zone in the $76,500–$77,500 range. Olson stated that this zone has already been retested and believes the reaction increases the likelihood of Bitcoin moving down to a demand area at $74,000–$74,500 if support breaks decisively.

Olson emphasized that a move below $77,000 would likely open the way to the $74,000 support area, described as the clearest downside target on the current chart.

If sellers press further, additional targets near $72,000 and $69,000–$70,000 may come into play. However, the analysis does not consider these lower levels mandatory scenarios unless the bearish momentum continues after a breach of $74,000 support.

Bulls have a clear invalidation point for the bearish setup. Bitcoin would need to defend the immediate support, rally toward $79,000 and decisively break above the descending trendline suppressing recent highs. Unless that resistance gives way, every short-term rally beneath the line could face renewed selling.

Support AreaPrice RangeStatus
Immediate Support$76,500–$77,500Retested
Key Downside Target$74,000–$74,500Potential if support fails
Lower Support (Conditional)$72,000, $69,000–$70,000Relevant only if selloff extends

During Asian trading, Bitcoin remained near $77,580. The market is sharply focused on the $77,000 support level and the $79,400–$80,800 resistance zone, as price action within these boundaries will steer near-term sentiment.

Macro View Remains Optimistic Amid Volatility

On a broader timeframe, Alex Marzell, a prominent digital asset strategist, highlighted how Bitcoin’s latest structure mirrors previous cycles: after a major breakout, price usually undergoes a period of consolidation, tests key support, and often enters a fresh expansion phase.

Marzell’s analysis draws attention to the recurring pattern where an old resistance becomes new support, underpinned by a persistent rising long-term trendline. This framework suggests that a near-term drop would not immediately unravel the larger bullish scenario, provided Bitcoin manages to hold its macro breakout region.

The long-term perspective forecasts that maintaining this powerful support zone could pave the way toward a sustained rally. Projections include $100,000 as a major psychological barrier, followed by $140,000 and an outside target of $200,000 in especially bullish conditions.

Marzell’s chart underscores that these higher levels should be regarded as conditional targets, with Bitcoin first needing to confirm that its current retest signals continued upward potential rather than initiating a deeper correction.

In August, Bitcoin’s performance stood out, advancing roughly 23% even after retracing from its recent highs, outperforming several major traditional assets during that period.

For now, focus remains on whether Bitcoin can defend the $77,000 and $74,000 areas. Sustained moves above $79,400–$80,800 would weaken the bearish case, while failure to hold support could set the stage for additional downside before the long-term bullish setup receives its next significant test.
