Shubh Varma, CEO and co-founder of Hyblock Capital, stated that expectations for a major altcoin season are misplaced, signaling that price targets of $5 for XRP and $1 for DOGE are increasingly unrealistic under current market conditions.
Shifting market structure challenges classic altcoin rallies
During a recent interview with market analyst Ray Salmond, Varma addressed long-standing hopes among crypto investors for a renewed altcoin rally. He maintained that a traditional altcoin season—characterized by widespread outperformance of altcoins versus Bitcoin—is unlikely to materialize in the foreseeable future.
Varma explained that, historically, an altcoin season has been measured by the number of altcoins outperforming Bitcoin over a sustained period. He said, “If you track 100 altcoins, usually if 75% of them are outperforming Bitcoin, you can call that as an altcoin season.”
Varma pointed out that by this metric, the industry has not experienced a genuine altcoin season for at least 18 to 24 months, despite significant movements in Bitcoin’s price.
Hyblock Capital, a crypto analytics provider, has closely observed these shifts in performance across coins. Varma sees the absence of altcoin season as part of a longer-term structural change.

Capital finds new alternatives on exchanges
Addressing the changing capital flows, Varma said the crypto ecosystem now offers a wider range of investment choices than in previous cycles. He explained that during prior rallies, capital circulating within crypto exchanges had few destinations beyond established altcoins. This limited choice supported strong rotations and sharp rallies in many altcoins when Bitcoin gained value.
Now, as Varma described, investors can access products tied to real-world assets (RWAs) and artificial intelligence (AI) equity instruments directly through many exchanges. “On these crypto exchanges, you can buy RWAs and you can buy AI equity perks,” he noted, emphasizing how these products compete for capital once destined only for altcoins.
This evolution has altered the classic dynamic where success in Bitcoin often translated into rising prices for smaller coins. Instead, Varma highlighted the proliferation of new on-platform alternatives as a fundamental reason traditional altcoin rallies are less likely to occur.
Mini dictionary: RWAs (real-world assets) refer to blockchain-based representations of physical or traditional assets such as stocks, commodities, and real estate, expanding investment options for crypto users on digital platforms.
| Investment Option | Cycle 2020-2021 | Current Cycle |
|---|---|---|
| Altcoins | Main beneficiary of capital flows | One among many competing products |
| Real-world assets (RWAs) | Rarely available on exchanges | Widely traded on major platforms |
| AI-linked products | Limited presence | Significant capital inflow |
Price targets and outlook for altcoins
While discussing the prospect of XRP reaching $5 and DOGE hitting $1, Varma stated, “I personally don’t see it happening because there’s so much other demand.” He underscored that his view is based on changes in market fundamentals, not temporary weaknesses or negative sentiment toward altcoins.
He clarified that the expansion of investment product offerings now diverts capital away from major altcoins, making it less likely for the dramatic price surges of previous cycles to repeat.
Varma observed that the assumption of inevitable capital rotation from Bitcoin into the altcoin market is no longer reliable, as investors have a growing menu of choices on digital trading platforms.
Investor strategies in a structurally different market
Varma’s comments suggest that investors relying on the playbooks from the 2020 or 2021 cycle may need to adjust expectations and strategies. The flow of capital and the structure of opportunities within the crypto sphere have both evolved significantly.
With more products on offer and investment choices broadening, the narrative of Bitcoin dominance giving way to a sweeping altcoin rally is no longer a given in the current environment. Leading investors are now advised to carefully reassess their strategies in light of these market changes.
