In Brief

  • 🚨 US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs lost $115.6 million on November 3 as outflows continued.

  • 📉 Big withdrawals from BlackRock and Grayscale outpaced new inflows in $BTC products.

  • ⚡ Although Bitcoin showed resilience, investors await the upcoming US jobs report for clues.

Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) listed in the United States recorded $115.6 million in net outflows on November 3. This decline followed a considerably larger withdrawal of $398.6 million just a day earlier, pushing total outflows for the first two November trading sessions to approximately $514.2 million.

Major ETF Withdrawals Drive Weekly Outflows

October closed on a challenging note for Bitcoin ETFs, with net outflows of $643.2 million reported on the final trading day. Market data pointed to continued institutional retrenchment at the start of November.

BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, led the latest round of ETF withdrawals through its iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), which saw $95 million exit the fund. Grayscale’s Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC) followed with $52.6 million in outflows. In contrast, most other US-based Bitcoin ETFs reported little or no meaningful activity over the same period.

Notably, not all funds mirrored this trend. Fidelity’s FBTC ETF added $6.8 million in new capital, while Bitwise’s BITB saw $21.9 million in net inflows. Grayscale’s flagship fund, GBTC, also recorded $3.3 million in inflows, providing some offset to the broader sector withdrawals.

Despite these smaller inflows, aggregate ETF activity remained negative. The influx of capital into funds like FBTC, BITB, and GBTC was not sufficient to counterbalance the heavy outflows from IBIT and Grayscale’s Mini Trust.

On November 3, BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust posted the largest single-day outflow at $95 million, while Grayscale’s BTC Mini Trust also experienced withdrawals exceeding $50 million. These sizable moves contributed to a challenging start for Bitcoin ETFs in November.

ETF NameNet Flow (Nov. 3)
BlackRock iShares (IBIT)-$95 million
Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust (BTC)-$52.6 million
Fidelity (FBTC)+$6.8 million
Bitwise (BITB)+$21.9 million
Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC)+$3.3 million

Bitcoin Price Shows Resilience Amid Institutional Outflows

Despite the ongoing sell-off in ETF products, Bitcoin’s spot price displayed relative strength. BTC hovered around $76,300 on November 3, staged a recovery toward $78,000, then briefly dropped to $75,600 overnight before rebounding again to $78,230 by early November 4.

The decoupling between ETF flows and Bitcoin’s market price suggests that other buying activity may be counteracting institutional sales. However, Bitcoin remains below the key $80,000 psychological threshold. Further buying power is likely needed to reclaim this level and sustain upward momentum.

Institutional investors appear to remain cautious, reflected by the continued outflows, albeit at a slower pace than earlier in the week. They are closely monitoring whether Bitcoin can maintain its recent rebound toward $78,000 and potentially move above $80,000 in the coming days.

Although recent outflows have moderated, the overall trend signals that large investors are still approaching the market cautiously as Bitcoin’s price attempts to recover from recent losses.

Upcoming US Data Could Add Volatility

Looking ahead, the upcoming US employment report on November 6 could impact investor sentiment and introduce additional volatility to crypto markets. The data is expected to shape market expectations around Federal Reserve monetary policy in the final quarter of the year.

The evolving relationship between ETF flows and Bitcoin’s spot price underscores a shifting landscape for institutional crypto investment, with broader macroeconomic data playing an increasingly important role in market direction.
