The Ethereum Developer Community Conference (EDCON) 2024 featured a keynote by Vitalik Buterin titled “The Next 10 Years of Ethereum,” where he summarized his vision for Ethereum’s evolution by 2034. Buterin’s speech covered a series of transformative changes expected in Ethereum’s future, focusing on topics like voting, scalability, user experience, and technological advancements.
Transparent Voting Process
Buterin envisions a significant role for Ethereum in the voting sector by 2034. He predicts that Ethereum-based wallets will facilitate more transparent voting processes. This integration aims to enhance the integrity and transparency of voting mechanisms. Additionally, Buterin highlighted the potential of combining voting with financial aspects, suggesting that Ethereum’s capabilities could extend into new governance and decision-making areas.
Scalability and transaction fees were another major focus of Buterin’s speech. He expressed his belief that Ethereum will make significant advancements in scalability over the next decade.
This progress will result in lower transaction fees, making Ethereum more accessible and efficient for everyday use. These advancements are expected to eliminate current limitations and make Ethereum a more viable option for a broader range of applications.
User Experience and Security
Regarding user experience and security, Buterin predicted that by 2034, the user-centric features of Web2 and the user sovereignty focus of Web3 will converge. He emphasized that combining the strengths of these two paradigms will lead to more secure and intuitive services than those currently available on traditional Web2 platforms. This integration aims to enhance both the functionality and security of Ethereum-based applications.
Buterin also discussed the future of Layer-2 (L2) solutions on Ethereum. He predicted that using Ethereum L2 will become as seamless as interacting with the Ethereum mainnet itself. This development is likely to contribute to a smoother and more efficient user experience, further supporting Ethereum’s growth and adoption.
Looking beyond existing technologies, Buterin encouraged developers to innovate rather than merely replicate current Web2 technologies. He envisioned a future where various devices and technologies, such as wearable devices, locally run artificial intelligence, augmented reality (AR), and brain-computer interfaces (BCI), are integrated into Ethereum’s ecosystem. He also mentioned that wallets and browsers might include new technologies like Community Notes and prediction markets with advanced security features to verify and protect user interactions.
