Zcash (ZEC) holders will soon have the opportunity to participate directly in the protocol’s decision-making process through the upcoming NU7 Coinholder Vote. This mechanism links voting power to the amount of ZEC held in shielded form, distinguishing it from governance systems that rely on validator or delegated voting structures.
Mainnet Snapshot and Eligibility
Eligibility for the NU7 Coinholder Vote will be established by a snapshot of the Zcash mainnet at block height 3,459,350, which is currently estimated to occur around 22:20 GMT+3 on August 24, 2026. The exact timing of the snapshot depends on when the designated block is mined, making block height—not local time—the authoritative factor.
Only shielded, spendable ZEC stored in the Ironwood protocol at the time of the snapshot will qualify for voting power. Coins residing in Orchard, Sapling, or Sprout pools or as transparent ZEC are not eligible unless they have previously been migrated into Ironwood. Additionally, ZEC kept on centralized exchanges or external networks must be moved into self-custody within Ironwood by the snapshot for holders to participate.
Unlike some other blockchain votes, participants are not required to retain their ZEC holdings throughout the entire voting period. Once the mainnet records block 3,459,350, users may freely transfer their coins; eligibility is determined solely at the moment of the snapshot.
Voting Timeline and Wallet Support
The voting process will begin on August 25 and conclude on September 14 at 22:00 GMT+3. Multiple wallets support the NU7 voting—including Vizor, Zashi, and Zkool—allowing a broad range of users to participate. Those with Keystone hardware wallets may also vote while keeping their private keys secure on the device.
Several significant protocol adjustments are up for vote in this round. These include determining the rate at which new ZEC is issued, setting the timeline for reintroducing previously removed coins through future block rewards, and deciding when to completely disable legacy Sprout transactions on the network.
Voting Mechanism and Privacy
To ensure privacy and security, the Zcash network employs homomorphic encryption during voting. This technology fully encrypts both each individual choice and the corresponding ZEC amounts, such that only the total tally for each response can be viewed after the vote is finalized.
In an added privacy measure, every submitted vote is split across 16 unlinkable ballots, making it even harder to correlate specific preferences with exact balances.
The voting system uses homomorphic encryption to safeguard user privacy by encrypting each selection along with the associated ZEC amounts. At the end of balloting, only the overall ZEC support for each proposal is revealed, while every vote is divided into 16 unlinkable portions to reduce balance-linkability.
