Every day in the cryptocurrency markets, a new major event changes the agenda. Today, the focus is on hacking. Following the $200 million DeFi hack this morning, one of the crypto security experts revealed that the hot wallet of the popular exchange has been hacked.
Crypto Exchange Hacked
A few days ago, CyversAlerts was the first to report the $70 million loss of the CoinEx exchange. Now, the focus is on Huobi, or the new name, HTX exchange. Aside from the allegations that Justin Sun uses customer assets as personal capital, today’s event clearly indicates a significant loss. One of the exchange’s hot wallets may have been hacked.
CyversAlerts, the announcement maker, wrote the following minutes ago:
“Yesterday, our machine learning-supported system detected a suspicious transaction. Although we tried to contact Huobi/HTX officials, we were not successful. We confirmed that one of their hot wallets had been compromised, resulting in a loss of $7.9 million. Huobi is offering a 5% White Hat bonus to the attacker.”
Hackers have been categorized based on their intentions for years. Black and White hat hackers carry out attacks for different purposes. The White Hat group offers cybersecurity services to companies in the legal part of the business and attacks systems as part of penetration testing. Black hat hackers, on the other hand, conduct attacks to obtain loot (crypto, sellable databases, etc.) or simply to harm the system.
If one of Huobi’s wallets can be hacked, investors may also fear others. The price of the exchange’s native token may be negatively affected during this process, and investors may not be able to withdraw their funds during a potential bank run. Therefore, it is important to be cautious.
The tx statement sent by the exchange for the reward offer says:
“We have verified your real identity. Please return the money to the address 0x18709E89BD403F470088aBDAcEbE86CC60dda12e. We will give you a 5% bonus. This offer is valid for 7 days and will expire on October 2, 2023. If you do not return the money by the final delivery date, we will request legal intervention.”
