As the excitement for the presidential elections in the United States continues, a development concerning the crypto sector has taken place. Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, who had a plan for the crypto space and received support from the crypto industry, officially announced on January 16th that his candidacy was suspended following the Iowa election results.
Presidential Candidate’s Remarkable Statements
Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy made the following statement on social media platform X on January 16:
“People have spoken loudly and clearly about who they want. Tonight, I am suspending my campaign and supporting Donald J. Trump, and I will do everything in my power to ensure he becomes the next President of the United States. I am extremely proud of this team, this movement, and our country.”
According to reports, former President Donald Trump won the Iowa election, followed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley. Ramaswamy had drawn attention last year by receiving support from crypto advocates, including Messari CEO Ryan Selkis.
US Election and the Crypto Sector
The crypto sector was brought up several times last year by Republican presidential candidates. Last month, Ramaswamy stated that his plan would partly prevent the regulation of crypto wallets and allow the freedom to innovate without regulatory agency access.
Ramaswamy also criticized SEC Chairman Gary Gensler last month during a debate. While the SEC chairman consistently maintained that many crypto assets are securities and must comply with securities laws, he called on crypto exchanges to register with the SEC. Ramaswamy commented on the issue:
“I think it’s shameful that the current leader of the SEC, Gary Gensler, can’t even tell Congress whether Ethereum is considered a regulated security. This is another example of the administrative state going too far.”
Trump has not publicly announced who he would choose as vice president if he wins the nomination. Trump took notable steps in the NFT space and launched a collection of 45,000 NFTs in December 2022. A year later, Trump released another NFT collection offering fans chances to win perks such as dinner with the former president or a piece of the suit he wore when he was detained by Georgia police in August.
