The first female governor of the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (TCMB), Hafize Gaye Erkan, announced her resignation a few hours ago, and her successor has now been named. Just a few minutes ago, the official gazette announced the appointment of Dr. Fatih Karahan as the new governor, a name that had been discussed among candidates. So, who is Fatih Karahan?
Who is Fatih Karahan?
Promoted from Deputy Governor to Governor of TCMB, Fatih Karahan was born in 1982 in Eskişehir. He graduated from Boğaziçi University with degrees in Mathematics and Industrial Engineering and completed his master’s and doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania in 2012.
Like Gaye Erkan, Fatih Karahan also has experience in the USA. He began working as an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York in 2012, where he served as the Head of Labor and Product Market Studies and as an advisor on monetary policy until two years ago.
In 2022, Karahan worked as a senior economist at Amazon and was appointed Chief Economist there in November of the same year. He then became Deputy Governor of TCMB on July 28 of the previous year.
Dr. Fatih Karahan, who returned to Turkey with his family on July 27, is now taking on the role of Governor at a critical time for Turkey.
