Rocket Pool is a decentralized Ethereum staking pool offering up to 4.33% APR for ETH2 staking. Users can join Rocket Pool with its decentralized network of node operators or run their own node with just 16 ETH. In the latter case, they can earn a commission from staking ETH and additional RPL rewards, yielding up to 6.36% APR by providing RPL collateral.
What is Rocket Pool (RPL)?
Rocket Pool offers liquid staking, allowing users to benefit from rising prices without re-evaluating their staked collateral, which could trigger a taxable event. Additionally, Rocket Pool provides smart nodes: specialized node software that allows anyone to run a node on its network. By socializing losses from bad nodes across the network, users minimize the risk of penalties. This is supported by the pool’s open-source, audited smart contracts that ensure fully non-custodial staking and maximum decentralization.
Rocket Pool provides an opportunity for anyone to participate in ETH2 staking, regardless of their capital investments or technological sophistication. Its core proposition is to enable trustless staking of ETH on a network of decentralized autonomous nodes backed by RPL collateral.
Rocket Pool sees itself as a complement to staking-as-a-service providers. These providers can choose to maximize their returns by joining Rocket Pool and running a node, receiving rewards in ETH and RPL. In this way, even a major player like Gemini could utilize Rocket Pool by creating nodes, each staking 16 ETH. This is where Rocket Pool’s staked ETH wrapper, rETH, comes into play.
rETH is the tokenized version of staked ETH in Rocket Pool, allowing stakers to interact with amounts ranging from 0.01 ETH to 32 ETH. Users stake their Ether and receive rETH in return, which automatically accrues staking rewards based on the performance of the entire network of node operators. The value of rETH is protected against slashing through insurance mechanisms; node operators stake RPL to the nodes as collateral for any penalties incurred.
The second way to interact with Rocket Pool is through Node Staking. Users can deposit 16 ETH, and an additional 16 ETH from users staking ETH and receiving rETH is assigned. Essentially, you stake your 16 ETH and an additional 16 ETH on behalf of the protocol. Rocket Pool automatically adjusts the commission rate based on the supply and demand for node operators and available ETH. With this model, node operators are rewarded for providing insurance to stakers in case they are penalized or slashed. Additionally, node operators must deposit a minimum amount of RPL as collateral.
