The state of Louisiana has become one of the few in the United States that allows citizens to pay state agencies using Bitcoin (BTC) 
$78,774 and USDC. This initiative will initially begin with the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, with officials aiming to expand it to other departments in the future.

According to the announcement, all payments made in cryptocurrency will be converted to U.S. dollars at the time of transaction through a cryptocurrency payment processor named Bead Pay. Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming emphasized that this new payment option offers flexibility and protects the state from the volatility of cryptocurrencies.

By offering cryptocurrency as a payment option, we are not only innovating; we are providing our citizens with flexibility and freedom in engaging with state services. This unique innovation also protects our state from any volatility associated with cryptocurrencies.”

This approach is understandable as extreme volatility can lead to losses due to abnormal value changes in stored assets. For instance, merchants in El Salvador can convert BTC payments to cash instantly.
Cryptocurrency Encourages Economic Growth
This development follows the implementation of House Bill 488, which took effect on June 19, 2024. The law provides legal protections for Bitcoin users and miners while prohibiting Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) in state payments. It supports the self-custody of digital assets, promotes Bitcoin mining in industrial areas, and ensures transaction freedom.
Louisiana State Representative Mark Wright noted that integrating new technologies into state services would create a positive impact for citizens.
