According to a recent announcement made while Zach was preparing the article, one of the popular crypto platforms suffered a cyber attack. During the same minutes, we observed the price of BTC drop to $67,000. This nearly $2,000 decline could lead to larger losses in altcoins.
Transak Becomes a Victim of Ransomware
The crypto payment service provider Transak was recently reported to be a victim of ransomware by ZachXBT. Attackers have been obtaining billions of dollars in unjust payments through such ransomware for years, and it is disappointing that the latest victim is a crypto company.
Impact on User Data
Transak supports 170 different cryptocurrencies and operates in 162 countries. The platform is widely used by customers due to its compatibility with 75 different blockchains and support for over 20 local payment methods. In today’s announcement, the company stated:
“We recently detected that an attacker gained unauthorized access to one of our employees’ laptops through a sophisticated phishing attack. The attacker managed to log into a third-party KYC provider’s system that we use for document scanning and verification services using the stolen credentials. As a result, the attacker obtained access to certain user information stored in the vendor’s control panel.
1.14% of our users had their credentials compromised. There was no access to emails, passwords, credit card information, social security numbers, or other private data.
Currently, there is no indication of data misuse. However, we advise affected users to remain vigilant and monitor for suspicious activity. We will reach out to affected users with advice and resources to protect themselves from potential misuse of information, including identity monitoring services.”
