Nigeria and Binance
The Binance executive has been under extreme pressure from the U.S. government for months. Tigran Gambaryan was arrested in Nigeria, charged with various crimes, including money laundering, while he was unjustly detained for a considerable time.
Nigerian authorities initially held Binance accountable for fluctuations in the local currency, demanding billions in payments from the exchange. They claimed that the extensive use of the exchange by citizens harmed the country’s economy. However, Binance refused to make such payments.
Subsequently, Tigran was arrested despite his illness and innocence, facing a risk of permanent damage while being detained. We frequently shared statements made by his wife and Binance officials regarding his condition.
Biden Expresses Gratitude
Last week, the Binance executive was finally released. To avoid the risk of sanctions, Nigeria took the necessary steps as Congress signaled a potential “hostage” decision. During a phone call today, Biden thanked Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for facilitating Tigran Gambaryan’s release on humanitarian grounds.
“President Biden expressed condolences regarding the recent flooding in northeastern Nigeria and highlighted President Tinubu’s leadership in securing the release of Tigran Gambaryan, an American citizen and former U.S. law enforcement officer.”
Gambaryan, who previously worked for the IRS, had transferred to oversee financial crime compliance at Binance. While in detention, he suffered from malaria and pneumonia, but the charges against him were dropped six days ago.
