Iran launched missiles and drones at Jubail Industrial City in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province on April 7, triggering significant fires across the area. Jubail hosts major petrochemical facilities, making it a critical hub for Saudi Arabia’s exports and a backbone of the region’s industrial sector.

The significance of Jubail attack

Located on the Gulf coast, Jubail is among the world’s largest industrial complexes. The city, along with Yanbu, reportedly accounts for a large share of Saudi Arabia’s non-oil exports and underpins much of the country’s chemical production capacity. Both are integral for the nation’s economic diversification efforts beyond petroleum.

Fires broke out after the strike, with videos circulating online suggesting multiple direct impacts on key sites within the industrial city. The disruption to operations at Jubail has raised concerns over its possible impact on global petrochemical supply chains at a time of heightened regional instability.

The Iranian attack comes amid escalating friction involving Israel and a shifting regional security environment. Tehran’s move has been interpreted as part of a broader response toward what it views as regional adversaries.

An adviser to Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf identified Saudi Arabia as a “main instigator” alongside Israel in ongoing tensions. Highlighting the perceived significance of the industrial targets, the adviser warned that damage inflicted on Saudi interests and its financial partners could be severe.

The adviser expressed that the consequences for Saudi Arabia, as well as for its partners in the Trump family, could be “beyond calculation.”

Iran’s response and market fallout

Parallel to the military strike, Iran has presented its own 10-point counter-proposal to a US-backed 15-point peace plan. The plan sets forth demands including security guarantees against further attacks, an immediate ceasefire, withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanon, and full removal of US sanctions on Iran.

Tehran reportedly suggested the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz under new terms. The proposed deal would levy a $2 million transit fee for each vessel, with Oman sharing in the proceeds. Iran also outlined a preference for dedicating fee revenues toward reconstruction, rather than seeking traditional war reparations.

Mahdi Mohammadi, who serves as a strategic adviser to the Iranian Parliament’s speaker, argued that Iran had achieved key objectives, and it would only support an agreement that formalizes its regional advances. With a negotiating deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump rapidly approaching, Mohammadi commented on the urgency of the situation.

According to Mohammadi, “Iran has clearly and overtly won the war and will only accept an ending that consolidates its gains and creates a new security regime in the region … it is Trump who has about 20 hours to either surrender to Iran or his allies will return to the Stone Age. We will not back down!”

Polymarket, a decentralized prediction market platform that tracks geopolitical odds, priced a slim 3% probability for a US-Iran ceasefire by April 7. Participants on the exchange did not appear to expect a near-term resolution to the standoff.

Financial markets responded to the heightened uncertainty. Bitcoin (BTC) fell by approximately 2% to $68,500 in early Tuesday trading. Brent crude oil prices rose above $111, while gold and silver both registered declines. U.S. equity markets displayed relative resilience, with key indices like the Nasdaq Composite, Dow Jones, and Russell 2000 managing modest gains.

With the White House’s Hormuz deadline looming, observers worldwide are watching to see whether Iran’s actions will prompt new diplomatic negotiations or provoke the military escalation President Trump has warned of. The coming hours are likely to determine the direction of this latest Middle Eastern crisis.
