Spot Bitcoin trading volume has crashed by 81%! What are the key trends investors need to watch?

In Brief

  • 🚨 Spot $BTC trading volume has plunged by 81 percent since its 2025 peak.

  • 📉 Most activity is now concentrated on just a few big exchanges, sidelining smaller platforms.

  • 🧐 Retail investors seem to be shifting toward stocks and gold rather than crypto.

Spot trading volume for Bitcoin on centralized exchanges has plummeted sharply in recent months. Data shared by market commentator Su Hu reveals that Bitcoin’s spot volume has fallen a staggering 81 percent compared to its October 2025 peak. The figures signal a significant drop in trading activity on major exchanges and point to waning risk appetite among market participants.

Trading activity contracts noticeably

In October 2025, Binance’s monthly spot trading volume stood at $198.6 billion. Since then, the figure has fallen dramatically, dropping to just $36.4 billion. Looking across all centralized exchanges, total spot trading volume posted at $4.3 trillion in March 2026.

This level in March 2026 reflects a 48 percent decline compared to the October 2025 highs. It also marks the lowest point recorded since October 2024. Reports indicate that spot trading activity continued to weaken in April, sliding to the lowest level seen in the past 25 months.

The downward trend accelerated following the dramatic market crash on November 10. During that selloff, total liquidations exceeded $19 billion. From that point onward, spot trading volumes on major exchanges have consistently dropped month after month.

According to Su Hu, the waning strength in spot markets shows a striking reduction in retail investor interest toward crypto assets compared to previous years.

Liquidity clusters around top exchanges

The data further reveals that around 90 percent of market liquidity is now concentrated on a handful of leading trading platforms. This shift demonstrates that market participation is becoming increasingly centralized on a limited number of major exchanges, while activity on smaller platforms has faded.

By March 2026, Binance alone accounted for 32 percent of global spot market share. At points in 2025, its share had even reached as high as 41 percent. As one of the world’s largest crypto exchanges, Binance’s massive volumes give it outsized influence over overall market liquidity.

Spot market trading flows are often seen as a key barometer of retail investor behavior. The weakness in these flows not only signals lower participation, but also indicates that trading is now dominated by a smaller group of large players and major exchanges.

Investors may be eyeing alternative assets

The analysis highlights another trend: in recent months, investors have shown greater interest in other asset classes such as stocks, gold, and commodities. These markets are perceived as offering clearer narratives and more stable trends, while enthusiasm for crypto appears more muted during this period.

At the same time, the lower level of retail involvement is not necessarily considered a purely negative development. Periods of low volume can often coincide with phases in which stronger, more sophisticated players are quietly accumulating supply.

Su Hu also argued that retail investors may struggle to access the same information as major market participants. Against this backdrop, he suggested maintaining a reasonable allocation to alternative crypto assets, while also considering more secure investment options elsewhere.

Ethereum in need of a fresh narrative

The analysis also suggests that Ethereum faces a deeper challenge than just weak price action. The bigger risk, it concludes, is the prospect of an extended period of flat, sideways trading that could last a long time. According to the assessment, for Ethereum to attract new capital, developer interest, and broader market consensus, it may need to craft a compelling new story or narrative.
