Coinbase has announced new measures to address the future threat of quantum computing, unveiling plans for a post-quantum custody system designed to protect digital assets, specifically Bitcoin, against emerging cryptographic risks.
Coinbase preps for quantum computing threat
Coinbase, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, stated that while quantum computers do not currently pose a direct risk to blockchain cryptography, the company sees early preparation as essential. Coordinating updates for decentralized networks like Bitcoin and onboarding millions of users to new security protocols would require significant time and collaboration across the industry.
The company reported that their current key management system already secures approximately 99.9% of custodied assets.
