Uniswap Labs introduced Permissioned Pools on Uniswap v4 on July 23, 2026, an open-source standard designed to add onchain access checks for regulated assets. This update enables approved users to trade tokenized funds, securities, equities, and other restricted products directly via automated market maker (AMM) pools.

Structure and Compliance

Permissioned Pools bring issuer-managed allowlists into the core of Uniswap v4. Before any swap or the opening of a liquidity provider (LP) position, the pool’s smart contract calls a hook to check whether a wallet address appears on the issuer’s list. Transactions from non-approved wallets are immediately blocked, ensuring that access is tightly controlled according to regulations.

These protocols do not impact the operation of regular v4 pools, which remain permissionless and accessible under current guidelines. Issuers now have the option to adopt the restricted format for assets needing identity verification, transfer restrictions, or investor eligibility checks; otherwise, they may opt for the standard pool format.

Uniswap itself is not responsible for the composition of the allowlists or for managing wallet approvals. Instead, issuers retain authority over the allowlist and can customize operational rules to match regulatory needs for each asset.

Every permissioned pool enforces identity and access requirements internally, meaning compliance checks for regulated assets are handled by the protocol itself and not through a public-facing interface.

Compliance controls are facilitated through v4 hooks—flexible smart contract extensions which let issuers customize how and when access checks occur during a transaction. The pools support virtual accounting, allowing onchain settlements while regulated assets remain restricted within permissioned contracts.

Approved traders interact with AMMs rather than traditional order books, and liquidity providers deposit assets to back trades under the supervision of the issuer’s rules.

Partners and Technical Standards

Superstate, Securitize, and Dowgo played integral roles as early partners, shaping Permissioned Pools and their integration with existing compliance standards. Superstate, an independently funded company focusing on tokenized equities and investment funds, partnered with Uniswap to pursue on-chain shareholding and regulated financial products. It claimed that the new format allows AMMs, lending platforms, and other whitelisted DeFi applications to interact with eligible equities.

Securitize, a platform known for tokenizing real-world assets and facilitating compliance for digital securities, worked directly with Uniswap Labs to ensure compatibility of Securitize DS Protocol-issued assets with Permissioned Pools. Both firms are pursuing expanded access for compliant tokenized assets within decentralized markets.

Dowgo, another early contributor, proposed integrating the ERC-3643 standard, which enhances on-chain identity verification and transfer limitation mechanisms. This move is contingent upon Dowgo obtaining DLT TSS authorization under the European Union’s DLT Pilot Regime, currently under review by France’s ACPR.

Mini dictionary: ERC-3643 is a token standard facilitating on-chain access management, supporting identity checks, transfer restrictions, and compliance controls for regulated digital assets.

Operational Scope and Market Outlook

Permissioned Pools are not applied to all Uniswap v4 markets. Issuers or developers must set up these pools for each eligible asset; the protocol does not enforce universal identity checks or trading restrictions at the broader network level. Standard permissionless pools continue to function as before, open to developers and users under existing protocol rules.

Uniswap referenced forecasts that the total tokenized asset market could reach $11 trillion by 2030, though actual figures remain far lower. As of May 2026, tokenized real-world assets had reached approximately $34 billion, with $1.55 billion attributed to tokenized equities.

The introduction of Permissioned Pools reflects ongoing efforts to reconcile decentralized finance with global regulatory standards, creating new pathways for compliant real-world asset trading through Uniswap’s decentralized infrastructure.
