Latest sale and capital reshuffling

In a Form 8-K filing dated August 10, Strategy reported completing the sale of its Bitcoin holdings between August 3 and August 9. The average sale price for the transaction was $64,262 per coin. The company used the funds generated from this sale to repurchase 1.152 million shares of its STRC preferred stock for the same amount, $108.6 million.

Following this transaction, Strategy’s total Bitcoin reserve now stands at 840,447 BTC. The company disclosed that its overall investment in acquiring Bitcoin has reached approximately $63.36 billion, with an average purchase price calculated at $75,385 per BTC. This means the most recent sale was executed at nearly 15% below its cumulative cost basis.

Strategy used the proceeds from the Bitcoin sale to buy back 1.152 million shares of its preferred stock, with each BTC sold at an average of $64,262, below the company’s overall acquisition price of $75,385 per coin.

Recent trend of major disposals

Strategy’s recent activity marks a rapid shift from its earlier approach of accumulating Bitcoin. The sale of 1,690 BTC is the second substantial disposition in as many weeks. During the previous week, from July 27 to August 2, the company sold 1,638 BTC for around $104.7 million, achieving an average price of $63,957 per Bitcoin.

Combined, the sales over the last two weeks total 3,328 BTC and have generated approximately $213.3 million for Strategy.

July 1-52,225$135.2 millionNot specified

Additionally, late June and early July saw even larger disposals, with Strategy selling 3,588 BTC across two separate transactions. The company first sold 1,363 BTC for $80.8 million between June 29 and June 30, then moved another 2,225 BTC for $135.2 million between July 1 and July 5. These moves collectively add up to a series of liquidations exceeding $400 million in just over a month.

Strategic shift and implications

Previously, Strategy was primarily associated with aggressive Bitcoin accumulation. The pattern of recent large-scale sales indicates a strategic pivot as the company reallocates resources to reinforce its preferred stock capital base.

Market observers have noted this change in approach, and it remains to be seen how these continued sales might impact both Strategy’s standing in the market and the broader dynamics of Bitcoin liquidity.

Strategy is recognized for holding one of the largest institutional Bitcoin treasuries. Its activities are widely tracked for potential signals about corporate sentiment in digital asset management.

The direction and pace of Strategy’s recent Bitcoin sales suggest a significant change from its previous accumulation-focused approach, as the company increasingly turns to BTC holdings for capital management.
