Gen Z investors are increasing their participation in exchange-traded funds (ETFs), with a notable shift away from individual stock exposure, according to data from Binance Research. The latest figures reveal a rising trend in ETF inflows and trading volumes among this younger group, even as total equity allocation slowed.

ETF activity climbs among Gen Z investors

Unleveraged ETFs secured 21.9% of Gen Z net equity inflows in July, up from 18.5% in June. During early August, ETFs accounted for 25% of Gen Z equity trading volume, compared to only 9.5% for Millennials. The data indicates a clear generational difference in investment strategies.

Single-stock exposure among Gen Z dropped from 77% to 74.2% of net equity inflows over the same period, marking a gradual decline as ETF adoption gained ground. The increase in ETF trading was especially apparent throughout June, July, and into August.

Gen Z ETF inflows rose to 21.9% in July as younger investors favor portfolios with greater diversification, while single-stock exposure slipped to 74.2%. ETF trading activity reached 25% of this group’s equity volume in early August, a significant increase from 9.5% among Millennials.

Binance, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges with a growing presence in traditional finance, also observed differing trading trends by age group. While Gen Z boosted their ETF exposure, Millennials remained more focused on single-stock investing, maintaining a lower 9.5% ETF trading share at the start of August.

Portfolio diversification increases

ETFs accounted for 14.6% of Gen Z equity turnover in June but rose to 21.4% in July. Despite a 17.4% monthly decline in Gen Z’s total net equity deployment in July, ETF inflows fell just 2%. Meanwhile, single-stock inflows dropped 20.4% and leveraged-product flows were down 28.5%.

The number of Gen Z ETF holders grew by 2.9% in July, even as ETF holders among Millennials fell by 4.5% and among Gen X by 5.9%. The data suggests Gen Z continues to add diversified fund exposure, while older cohorts reduced their participation.

Binance further reported that trading frequency did not suggest Gen Z investors have a uniform high-turnover approach. On average, members of this group executed three bStocks trades and eight direct equity trades per month. Leveraged ETF activity remained limited, with 88.2% of Gen Z TradFi-Perps accounts not engaging in leveraged or inverse ETF trades.

ETF demand persists amid broad equity slowdown

A closer look at account behavior revealed that 76% of Gen Z bStocks accounts acted as net equity accumulators in July, compared with 67% for Millennials. In direct equities, 77% of Gen Z users added to their positions.

Several industry studies have shown that Gen Z investors are shaped by social media, new asset classes, and a desire to avoid missing out on market opportunities. Research from the FINRA Foundation and CFA Institute found that 37% of U.S. Gen Z investors cited social-media influencers as a key factor in their investment decisions.

However, Binance’s report focuses on actual capital allocation after market entry. Diversified products, such as ETFs, demonstrated resilience in July as inflows into single stocks and leveraged funds weakened.

The recent changes also followed tremendous growth in the U.S. ETF market overall. As of June 2026, ETF industry assets reached $15.70 trillion, representing a 36.6% increase from $11.49 trillion seen in June 2025. Net ETF issuance in the first half of 2026 reached about $991.6 billion, up from $542.7 billion during the first half of the previous year.

Binance introduced its direct-equity product at scale in June, so the research period covers roughly two months of user data and specifically reflects the behavior of Binance TradFi participants rather than the global investor population.
