Instant cross-border payments for businesses

Ripple stated that the Ripple Payments platform will enable Jeonbuk Bank’s customers to make international transfers within seconds or minutes, with service available 24 hours a day. The offering specifically targets businesses engaged in international activity, such as import-export companies, technology startups, and digital content creators.

This new infrastructure is expected to replace conventional cross-border wire transfers, which typically rely on the SWIFT network and can take several days to clear. Ripple promised a faster and more cost-efficient alternative, though additional details on fees, supported currencies, and payment corridors remain undisclosed at this time.

Ripple explained that its collaboration offers Jeonbuk Bank quicker and less expensive money transfers compared to the traditional SWIFT network, which often involves intermediary banks and lengthy delays.

Neither company revealed whether the new service is currently available to Jeonbuk Bank’s customers or when a full rollout is planned. The specific technological backbone of the transfers—whether they will use XRP, RLUSD stablecoins, fiat settlements, or another digital asset—has not been clarified.

Mini dictionary: SWIFT network, the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, is a global messaging system banks use for secure and standardized cross-border payments. Transactions on SWIFT often involve multiple intermediaries and longer settlement times.

Ripple’s expanding presence in South Korea

The partnership with Jeonbuk Bank marks Ripple’s third agreement with a South Korean financial firm this year. Earlier in 2024, Ripple teamed up with Kyobo Life Insurance to test blockchain-based infrastructure for onchain government bond settlement. The company also collaborated with Kbank, a leading internet-only bank in South Korea, to work on institutional-grade wallet solutions.

Ripple continues to target financial sector partners in South Korea as part of a broader push to expand its international payment and asset tokenization initiatives. Both Ripple and Jeonbuk Bank have not yet provided specific figures regarding expected transaction volumes for the new cross-border remittance service.

The companies emphasized that the service is designed to address the needs of corporate customers requiring rapid and reliable global fund transfers.

Unanswered questions and industry context

While Ripple and Jeonbuk Bank have outlined the broad goals of this new payments initiative, some key questions remain unresolved, including the scope of supported currencies, cost structure, and settlement mechanisms. It is also unclear whether the service will leverage Ripple’s native XRP token, the RLUSD stablecoin, or rely on traditional fiat pathways.

Jeonbuk Bank is a prominent regional bank in South Korea, serving a diverse client base with a focus on innovation in financial services. Ripple, established in 2012, has gained international recognition for its use of distributed ledger technology to streamline cross-border payments for the banking and financial services sector.

Ripple recently invested in Zilo and Licuido to strengthen its efforts in advancing tokenized capital markets and digital asset infrastructure worldwide.
