Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) listed in the United States recorded their strongest month of 2026 in August, as a sharp rally in Bitcoin drove a wave of inflows and renewed investor participation.

August’s surge reverses ETF losses

Net inflows into US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs rose sharply to $3.52 billion in August, compared to just $172 million in July. This marked the largest monthly inflow since October 2025 and marked a decisive shift in sentiment following several months of subdued volumes.

Bitcoin’s price climbed approximately 25% during August, delivering its best monthly performance since November 2024. Alongside the price surge, ETF investors responded by allocating fresh capital, helping offset the year’s earlier losses.

The substantial August inflows reduced total year-to-date net outflows from about $5.29 billion at the end of July to $1.77 billion by month-end, erasing nearly two-thirds of the deficit built up during the first seven months of 2026.

Investors increased ETF allocations on 16 of August’s 21 trading days, with a nine-day inflow streak from August 17 to August 27 standing out as a period of consistent institutional activity.

August’s inflows lifted net assets in US spot Bitcoin ETFs by roughly 31%, rising from $76.29 billion at July’s close to $99.61 billion by the end of August. Monthly trading volume also surged 49% to $58.63 billion, highlighting renewed trading interest in the sector.

Fresh capital powers ETF expansion

The increase in ETF assets outpaced Bitcoin’s price gains, with fund holdings growing more rapidly than the underlying asset. This trend suggests that new inflows, rather than solely price appreciation, fueled the overall growth in the funds.

Attaining nearly $100 billion in net assets, the ETFs approached a new milestone, reflecting increased confidence from both retail and institutional players.

September opens with renewed outflows

Despite the strong August, the positive momentum failed to carry into September. Data showed that US spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced $236.46 million in net outflows on September 1. This reversed the previous day’s $216.70 million inflow and marked the largest single-day outflow since July 31.

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) accounted for the bulk of the day’s withdrawals, losing $201.18 million, roughly 85% of the total. Fidelity’s FBTC posted $43.67 million in outflows, while Bitwise’s BITB bucked the trend with $8.38 million in inflows.

BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, operates the IBIT fund and has played a significant role in mainstreaming Bitcoin investment through ETFs in the US market.

Meanwhile, not all digital asset ETFs mirrored Bitcoin’s decline. Spot Ethereum ETFs attracted approximately $11 million in inflows on Tuesday, while XRP ETFs saw around $14.4 million enter their products. These figures reflect diverging investor sentiment across digital asset categories.

Mini dictionary: Net inflow, the total value of capital entering a fund or group of funds over a specific period, after accounting for withdrawals and redemptions. Net inflows are considered a positive sign of investor interest.
