The XRP Ledger Foundation has released version 3.4.0 of its open-source blockchain network, introducing new lending protocol amendments and a series of protocol fixes aimed at improving performance and security. The software update marks a significant step in expanding lending capabilities on the XRP Ledger, though the key features still require validator approval before they become active on the main network.
New lending protocol offers closed-ended vaults and accounting changes
Version 3.4.0 includes two major protocol amendments: LendingProtocolV1_1 and fixCleanup3_4_0. The LendingProtocolV1_1 amendment is designed to enhance the existing Single Asset Vaults by incorporating closed-ended vaults and shifting to cash-basis accounting for interest.
This updated protocol enables vaults to function through three defined phases: subscription, investment, and redemption. During subscription, network participants may deposit assets into a vault, after which the investment period begins. Once this phase starts, both deposits and withdrawals are paused, and pooled funds are allocated to originate loans.
Redemption then follows the investment period, allowing participants to claim their shares as eligible loans mature. The proposed structure would also require new loan brokers to utilize closed-ended vaults for loan origination, increasing transparency and methodical fund deployment.
A notable accounting shift means that interest income will only be recognized when borrowers actually make payments, altering the previous approach that accounted for interest at the time of loan origination.
Advancements in the protocol now allow interest to be recognized as income strictly when borrowers pay, moving away from earlier models that marked scheduled interest upfront.

Protocol updates and performance enhancements
Beyond lending, the fixCleanup3_4_0 amendment delivers a collection of network enhancements and issue resolutions. This update addresses protocol areas such as automated market makers (AMM), Multi-Purpose Tokens (MPT), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), escrow features, and permissioned trading.
Among the technical adjustments, the fix corrects Automated Market Maker Clawback behavior when MPT rounding yields a zero recovery, tightens balance and transfer checks on Multi-Purpose Tokens, and ensures compliance with protocol rules rather than mere log generation.
Additional improvements include the introduction of unique hash prefixes for counterparty and sponsor signatures, which aims to eliminate signature replay vulnerabilities across roles. The release also modifies node operations by pausing online deletion when ledger history gaps are detected, helping servers stay synchronized with the latest ledger entries.
Further refinements cover MPT freeze optimizations, improved peer-message handling for stronger security, and solutions for oversized transaction lists and malformed input data.
| Feature | Before 3.4.0 | After 3.4.0 |
|---|---|---|
| Lending Vault Type | Open-ended | Closed-ended |
| Interest Accounting | Scheduled at loan origination | Cash-basis, when paid |
| Protocol Fixes | Known issues in AMM and MPT | Addressed with fixCleanup3_4_0 |
| Node History Management | Limited protection on ledger gaps | Online delete pauses on gaps |
Validator vote to determine activation
Although XRPL 3.4.0 delivers the supporting code for new lending features, actual activation of these amendments depends on community governance. For a protocol change to become active, it must receive at least 80% approval from trusted validators for a continuous two-week period.
Until sufficient validator support is achieved, the lending protocol changes and other major updates remain dormant, serving only as technical infrastructure on the ledger. The XRP Ledger Foundation, which oversees development and network coordination, has encouraged operators to promptly upgrade to the latest version to ensure compatibility and stability.
Linux DEB and RPM installation packages for version 3.4.0 are available and signed by the Foundation. Operators may need to adjust repository configurations when updating from older versions.
The Foundation has called on server operators to adopt version 3.4.0 quickly to prepare the network for upcoming features and maintain optimal performance.
For now, the release lays groundwork for more robust lending options on the XRP Ledger, while emphasizing ongoing community participation in the network’s amendment process.
