Cardano has been integrated into the official x402 software kit, giving developers tools to build applications and artificial intelligence agents capable of paying for online services using ADA or other tokens on the Cardano network.
Expansion of x402 protocol support
The x402 standard allows for automated pay-per-use transactions embedded within internet requests, removing the need for user accounts, card information, or subscription models. A service responding to a user’s or agent’s request provides pricing and payment details; once payment is completed and verified, the user receives access to the service or data requested.
This technology can facilitate AI agents purchasing individual datasets or access to specific online resources instantly, streamlining digital commerce for machines and applications alike.
Coinbase, a major global cryptocurrency exchange headquartered in the United States, initiated the development of the x402 protocol in 2025 before transferring it to an organization supported by the Linux Foundation. Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Google, and Amazon Web Services are notable members of this organization.
Other blockchain networks, including Solana, the XRP Ledger, and several Ethereum-compatible platforms, already support x402. Cardano’s addition places the protocol among the major chains actively developing machine-first payment infrastructure.
Mini dictionary: x402, a protocol that leverages the unused HTTP 402 Payment Required status to allow seamless, automated payments directly within web requests. It is designed for machine-to-machine transactions without the need for manual intervention or user accounts.
Cardano’s technical progress and implementation status
Engineers from the Cardano Foundation, the nonprofit entity guiding the development of the Cardano blockchain, began integrating with the x402 protocol after a specification was accepted in June. They constructed both client and server-side tools, along with a facilitator component that handles the verification and submission of transactions.
The initial release, focused on TypeScript, has reportedly completed a successful payment on Cardano’s pre-production network. However, full mainnet integration and commercial-scale usage have not yet commenced. Python compatibility is also planned for upcoming releases.
Documentation for the facilitator states that while a real transaction was achieved on the pre-production network, the system has not yet seen broader deployment or started handling payments for large-scale services on mainnet. Developers can begin experimentation and integration, but production usage is still pending.
Cardano is looking to compete with Solana and the XRP Ledger in establishing its assets in emerging machine payments infrastructure, joining the race for adoption wherever developers choose to build AI and automated payment systems.
| Blockchain | x402 Support | Notable Backers | Status |

Industry outlook
Bringing Cardano into the x402 fold demonstrates its ambition to stay in step with leading blockchain platforms targeting machine-centric financial transactions. As more services adopt automated payments, the ability for networks like Cardano to offer integrated and programmable assets could expand their real-world application.
Solana and the XRP Ledger already provide support for x402 transactions, and the competitive space is expected to see further developments as demand for machine-first payment mechanisms grows. Cardano’s current focus is on enabling developers to experiment in pre-production environments while preparing future support for broader, commercial-grade deployments.
