Senator John Curtis, a Republican from Utah, has formally urged Senate Judiciary Committee leaders to launch an investigation into the activities of President Donald Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., and Hunter Biden, son of former President Joe Biden. Curtis highlighted concerns related to each individual’s involvement in the cryptocurrency sector and alleged use of family influence for personal financial benefit.
Alleged conflicts involving presidential families
In a letter addressed to Committee Chair Chuck Grassley and Ranking Member Dick Durbin, Curtis requested a thorough review of “the use of presidential family relationships for private financial benefit, preferential treatment, or access by domestic and foreign interests.” He specifically called for subpoenas for both Donald Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden to appear before the committee.
Curtis pointed to Donald Trump Jr.’s acceptance of gifts from Russian businessman Umar Kremlev during his wedding, as well as his involvement in promoting cryptocurrency ventures linked to the Trump family and advisory roles with platforms regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. President Trump recently stated that his son had repaid Kremlev for the wedding gift, which Trump Jr. and his wife described as generous.
Curtis also sought an inquiry into Hunter Biden’s “substantial business with foreign entities” along with instances where their presidential connections may have provided undue value. Curtis referenced Hunter Biden’s denial of involving his father in business dealings and noted President Biden’s December 2024 pardon of his son for alleged offenses occurring over the past decade.
Members of Congress have consistently scrutinized relationships between prominent political families and the cryptocurrency industry, citing concerns about conflicts of interest tied to presidential influence, family-backed digital asset ventures, and large international deals.
Prior calls for investigations into the Trump family’s crypto interests have been driven mainly by Democratic lawmakers. Focus areas have included digital asset projects such as Trump’s memecoin, the World Liberty Financial business associated with the Trump family, and a $500 million agreement involving the Abu Dhabi royal family.
Senator Curtis, who is currently serving his first Senate term, will hold his seat until 2030.
Legislative gridlock on crypto regulation
Curtis’s latest call for scrutiny follows a setback for the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, a measure aimed at defining market structure rules for the cryptocurrency sector. Last week, Senate Republicans failed to secure sufficient Democratic support to advance the bill.
Disagreements over ethical standards were cited by several Democrats as a key reason for withholding support. Some argued that Trump was allegedly “using crypto to turn the presidency into a profit generating machine.” President Trump reported earning $1.4 billion from digital asset-related ventures in 2025.
Republican lawmakers said President Trump had accepted stronger ethics provisions regarding his crypto holdings, though Democrats maintained that the proposed rules were not robust enough to address concerns about corruption.
Against the backdrop of ongoing policy debates, clear regulations for the cryptocurrency market remain elusive in the Senate as midterm elections draw near. In such an uncertain environment, monitoring emerging market trends and investor behavior has become essential for market watchers.
