Ethereum Foundation researcher Toni Wahrstätter recently reported that development on the Glamsterdam upgrade and EIP-7928, which introduces Block-Level Access Lists, is nearing completion. Wahrstätter expressed confidence regarding the progress, highlighting advancements as the project approaches a key milestone.
The first public test for Glamsterdam is on the horizon, following ongoing devnet testing. Developers have scheduled the Sepolia testnet fork for October 6, 2026, with the mainnet launch planned for the fourth quarter of 2026. An exact mainnet date is yet to be confirmed.
Wahrstätter described Glamsterdam as one of Ethereum’s most significant forks to date, attributing the extended development timeline to its ambitious scope. He believes the end result will justify the effort invested by the team and community.
The upgrade is designed to advance Ethereum’s scaling capabilities and introduce a new era for the network. Its primary goals include implementing parallelization to accelerate transaction processing, increasing overall capacity, and enhancing sustainability by curbing database bloat.

A notable highlight of Glamsterdam is the introduction of ePBS, a revamped block validation pipeline that reduces trust assumptions within the network. Additionally, Block-Level Access Lists (BALs) aim to bring parallelization benefits, laying the groundwork for a more scalable and efficient protocol.

Buterin referred to “Strawman,” Ethereum’s long-term roadmap, which suggests that upgrades following Hegota will move far beyond the technology of 2015. These future phases are expected to incorporate recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, and advanced consensus mechanisms to enhance quantum resistance.
Buterin outlined that after Hegota, Ethereum’s focus will shift to integrating advanced cryptographic and computational techniques. He described the network as a hybrid architecture, no longer just a blockchain, but a combination of modern cryptography and decentralized infrastructure to enable more advanced functionalities.
He also credited the PeerDAS solution as the beginning of Ethereum’s transformation, marking the start of moving from a traditional blockchain structure to a multifaceted, more powerful system. According to Buterin, the upgrades to follow will push Ethereum toward becoming a “cryptographic world computer.”
He emphasized that these innovations aim to deliver cheaper, more scalable, and more private high-security computation, surpassing the capabilities of earlier blockchain systems.
