Bitcoin faces key resistance at $86,900, $87,700, and $88,000 before $90,000

In Brief

  • 🚨 Large sell orders block Bitcoin between $86,900 and $88,000 as it targets $90,000.

  • 💡 Strong momentum keeps $BTC above key moving averages after a swift September rebound.

  • 📉 Perpetual futures order data shows the biggest wall at $88,000 near a key psychological level.

  • 📰 In previous attempts, sellers forced sharp reversals near $87,000.

Bitcoin is once again challenging the upper boundary of its recent price range, with BTC trading close to $86,000–$86,300 after rebounding strongly from its September lows. Price action now reflects a bullish structure, as Bitcoin remains above its major short- and medium-term moving averages. The recent upward movement has returned the cryptocurrency to the late-September high near $87,000.

Resistance levels identified

Several concentrated resistance zones are now evident on Bitcoin’s path toward $90,000. Analysis of perpetual futures order books reveals large sell orders at $86,900, $87,700, and $88,000. These levels represent the most immediate technical barriers and are likely to shape short-term trading.

The first resistance at $86,900 is particularly significant, given its overlap with previous price action. Bitcoin made an earlier attempt to climb near $87,000 but was pushed back into the $83,000–$85,000 area. If BTC decisively breaks through $86,900, it would signal both a technical breakout and the absorption of a notable wall of sell orders from derivative markets.

The next resistance appears at $87,700. With only a short distance between this and the first level, clearing $86,900 could quickly expose Bitcoin to additional supply pressure. Inability to move past $87,700 would leave the cryptocurrency contained below its recent local ceiling. Conversely, trading above it could sharply reduce the remaining gap to the $90,000 mark.

The $88,000 threshold features the largest sell order among the three resistance points, making it critical for the near-term outlook. This area also represents a psychological round-number barrier. Surpassing $88,000 would bring Bitcoin within about 2.3% of $90,000, with the next significant sell-side liquidity clusters located at $90,900 and above.

Momentum and confirmation signals

At present, Bitcoin’s underlying momentum supports the possibility of another upward test. The daily Relative Strength Index (RSI) has moved toward the upper part of its neutral range, but has not yet entered levels typically associated with an overbought market.

BTC’s price also continues to trade firmly above key moving averages, reinforcing its broader bullish structure. This technical setup leaves room for further gains if resistance levels are surpassed.

However, analysts note that large sell walls in perpetual futures markets may shift or disappear without notice. As a result, technical confirmation would require Bitcoin to break through each identified resistance—$86,900, $87,700, and $88,000—and sustain the advance above them.

Significant resistance remains between $86,900 and $88,000 on the path to $90,000, with price action needing to absorb visible sell orders for a true breakout.

Until these levels are cleared, Bitcoin will remain geographically close to $90,000, but a dense cluster of sell-side liquidity separates it from reaching this next major milestone.
