Porsche has announced the closure of its Web3 project and the Pioneers Circle community, nearly four years after first launching its 911 nonfungible token (NFT) collection. The company made the announcement in a post on X, stating that the initiative grew from its original technology-driven intent to ultimately include community events and a range of both online and offline experiences.
Porsche winds down NFT community
The German automaker confirmed that although the Web3 project and associated community activities are shutting down, holders of the Porsche 911 NFTs will retain full ownership of their digital assets. These NFTs will remain active and accessible on the blockchain and users’ wallets will be unaffected. Porsche also plans to archive its Discord server, making it read-only, and will no longer post updates to the project’s X account.
Porsche first launched the 911 NFT collection in January 2023. The company initially planned to mint 7,500 digital tokens, but after facing criticism over high prices and limited use cases, minting was stopped early, capping the total NFTs minted at only 2,363.
Drop in trading activity
Sales and trading of the Porsche 911 NFTs have steadily declined since their release. Figures from OpenSea show the collection reached approximately $20 million in all-time trading volume. However, in the last year, total trading dropped to just around $38,000, and only about $2,900 changed hands over the past month.
| Time Period | Trading Volume (USD) |
|---|---|
| All-time | $20,000,000 |
| Past year | $38,000 |
| Past month | $2,900 |
Project origins and future
Porsche entered the Web3 space in 2022, aiming to integrate blockchain technology with its brand experience. At the time, then-deputy chairman Lutz Meschke emphasized a long-term approach, highlighting uses in the metaverse, enhanced digital purchasing experiences, and applications within the company’s supply chains.
Despite these early ambitions, the Web3 initiative saw limited engagement and ultimately fell short of its original vision. Community response influenced the decision to halt minting, and trading volumes failed to recover afterward.
Porsche, founded in 1931 and known globally for its sports cars, had positioned this project at the intersection of automotive legacy and digital innovation. Its exit from the space reflects a shift in focus as the company reevaluates new digital strategies.
Mini dictionary: OpenSea, established in 2017, is one of the largest NFT marketplaces where users can buy, sell, and trade nonfungible tokens across various blockchains.
Porsche confirmed that all Porsche 911 NFTs issued during the project will remain fully functional on the blockchain and accessible to holders, even as the Web3 project itself winds down and community channels close.
