Bitcoin traded near $85,000 this week as the cryptocurrency market closely tracked geopolitical tensions and macroeconomic developments. Price consolidation kept traders watching key resistance levels, with a potential breakout toward $90,000 in focus if bullish momentum continues.

Bitcoin battles resistance near $85,000

After nearly five weeks fluctuating around $85,000, Bitcoin briefly touched $87,000 but failed to sustain higher levels. Market analysts highlighted the presence of a potential bull flag pattern, a technical indicator that suggests the possibility of further gains if the price convincingly moves above key resistance.

A decisive breakout would confirm the bull flag and could propel Bitcoin toward the $90,000 target. However, repeated rejection at resistance might see the price revisit lower support zones within the ongoing consolidation range.

Bitcoin must maintain momentum above $85,000 for a breakout, as repeated resistance could keep attention on lower levels and delay any move toward new highs.

Order book data from CoinGlass showed a $13.25 million bid around $82,500 and a $15.52 million ask at $84,799.90, but these figures remain subject to rapid change as trading conditions evolve.

Coinbase Premium Index hints at renewed US demand

The Coinbase Premium Index, which compares Bitcoin prices on Coinbase (a major US cryptocurrency exchange) with Binance (leading global crypto platform), started to recover early in the week. This movement is interpreted as a possible sign of strengthening spot demand from US traders and institutions.

Analysts cautioned that the index tracks price differences between exchanges—often influenced by exchange flows or stablecoin pricing—and therefore does not directly reflect fresh capital entering the market.

Sustained higher premiums on Coinbase can indicate strong buying interest, but confirmation from broader trading activity remains critical before declaring a renewed uptrend.

Mini dictionary: Coinbase Premium Index, a metric that shows the price gap for a cryptocurrency, mainly Bitcoin, between Coinbase and other primary exchanges such as Binance. A positive value suggests greater buying pressure in the US, while a negative gap means stronger demand on non-US platforms.

Hormuz Strait closure intensifies inflation concerns

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until the US fulfills seven specific conditions based on the Islamabad memorandum. He said Washington had sent proposals through a mediator, but the strait’s reopening depends on US actions.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi added that the passage could reopen within seven days if an acceptable proposal is reached. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical global oil shipping route, and disruptions there can significantly affect energy prices and global inflation trends.

Additional conflict in Yemen and regional tensions contributed to uncertainty in oil and risk asset markets, with traders closely watching developments for further escalation.

US inflation, yields and Bitcoin volatility

Rising US bond yields presented another challenge for Bitcoin. Treasury yields and mortgage rates increased, signaling more expensive borrowing costs and potentially tighter financial conditions. The 30-year mortgage rate reached 7.6% during the week, while the ISM was set to release its services data for a new inflation snapshot.

Upcoming US economic data, including Federal Reserve minutes, jobless claims, and inflation expectations, could impact monetary policy sentiment. Analysts noted that higher inflation signals may support continued restrictive policies, reducing investor appetite for risk assets such as cryptocurrencies.

Monitoring leverage and open interest, liquidation data revealed concentrated risk among highly leveraged long positions. If Bitcoin breaks below critical support, forced liquidations could drive prices sharply lower until new spot buyers step in.
