HM Treasury has selected Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Morgan Stanley, NatWest, and RBC Capital Markets to serve as joint lead managers for DIGIT, the United Kingdom’s first digitally-native government bond. This announcement finalizes the procurement phase ahead of a test issuance expected in the first quarter of 2027.

Native digital bond model

DIGIT is set to launch at a pivotal time, as tokenized government bonds begin to make their mark in global financial markets. The initiative presents a significant opportunity for banks, institutional investors, and blockchain firms to assess the potential of issuing and managing sovereign bonds using distributed-ledger technology.

Unlike most tokenized government bonds, which use a wrapper structure allowing the underlying asset to remain within traditional finance systems while providing investors digital claims on-chain, DIGIT is issued directly on a digital platform with no intermediaries. This difference positions DIGIT as a truly native issuance rather than a digital representation of an existing asset.

According to HM Treasury, DIGIT will be a short-dated bond, issued and settled fully on a blockchain platform within the Digital Securities Sandbox. It will remain outside the main UK government debt management program and may eventually be listed on the London Stock Exchange. The six appointed banks will handle underwriting, investor engagement, and distribution of funds for the bond issuance.

Economic Secretary Lucy Rigby called the appointment of these banks “an important step” towards the planned DIGIT test issuance in the coming year.

Tokenization benefits and remaining challenges

Advocates for tokenization cite improved efficiency as a primary benefit. Research by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) showed that the average bid-ask spread for tokenized bonds is around 19 basis points, compared to roughly 30 basis points for their traditional counterparts. Issuance costs were found to be similar. Programmed settlement offers additional advantages, such as shortened settlement cycles, reduced counterparty risk, and the ability to lower minimum investment sizes.

However, the tokenized government bond sector remains a small fraction of the global market. BIS data identified more than 60 tokenized bonds worth $8 billion, while the total global government bond market exceeds $80 trillion. Challenges remain, including incompatible platforms, fragmented regulation, and limited secondary market trading.

Market context and scope

The broader market for tokenized assets is expanding rapidly. In June 2026, analytics platform Allium reported that tokenized US money-market and Treasury funds reached $14.2 billion, up substantially from $1.7 billion two years earlier. This fast-growing sector involved 30 issuers, 48 funds, and 19 blockchain networks.

Tokenized wrappers of Treasury and government bonds made up 75% of the total market. The majority of these assets were concentrated among four major issuers: Hashnote, Ondo, Franklin Templeton, and BlackRock, who together managed 76% of the pool’s value.

Mini dictionary: Hashnote, Ondo, Franklin Templeton, and BlackRock are financial service companies specializing in asset management, with significant involvement in the development and management of tokenized securities and funds.

DIGIT’s role in future finance infrastructure

The potential impact of DIGIT is primarily structural, focusing on financial market infrastructure rather than cryptocurrency prices. A government bond issued natively on-chain could support tokenized repo financing, collateral management, and streamlined settlement processes, aligning with institutional requirements for programmable financial instruments.

The Bank for International Settlements has highlighted the potential benefits of a tokenized financial system that would include government bonds, central bank reserves, and commercial bank money. DIGIT contributes to the UK government’s wider initiative on financial tokenization, which involves collaboration from leading organizations such as Circle, Ripple, Coinbase, and BlackRock. A coalition of 54 organizations is reportedly participating in advancing these developments.

DIGIT is positioned not as a catalyst for crypto price movement, but as a foundational advancement in how financial institutions issue, settle, and manage sovereign debt on digital platforms.
