Erebor, a national bank focused on cryptocurrencies and backed by investor and entrepreneur Palmer Luckey, has amassed more than $7 billion in deposits from over 500 customers since opening. Erebor’s rapid growth comes just three years after Silvergate Bank’s failure, reigniting debate over the risks faced by crypto-centric financial institutions.

Erebor prioritizes liquidity over aggressive lending

Unlike many traditional banks, Erebor is taking a cautious stance by maintaining a large portion of its assets in cash and interbank balances. When filing its second quarter 2026 results, Erebor reported $4.06 billion in deposits alongside $4.17 billion in cash and interbank holdings. In contrast, gross loans reached only $77.8 million, underscoring the bank’s conservative lending approach.

The bank’s business model centers on retaining liquidity, partly driven by requirements set by the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). The OCC mandates Erebor to maintain a highly liquid balance sheet and a minimum Tier 1 leverage ratio of 12% during its first three years of operation. For the recent quarter, Erebor held a Tier 1 leverage ratio of 38.81%, far exceeding the minimum required.

Despite soaring deposit growth, Erebor’s profitability has yet to materialize. The bank reported a $16.3 million loss, a negative return on assets of 1.03%, and a net interest margin of just 0.71%. This mirrors a deliberate focus on liquidity over income, at least during its early years.

Erebor’s strategy appears designed to enable near-instant access to funds for clients, distinguishing it from conventional banks that rely heavily on lending for income.

Comparing Erebor and Silvergate

Silvergate, once a prominent crypto-facing bank, saw its asset base top $16 billion before its collapse in 2023. A review by the Federal Reserve’s inspector general attributed Silvergate’s downfall to an over-reliance on crypto clients, rapid expansion, weak governance, and dependency on uninsured, non-interest-bearing deposits.

During Silvergate’s crisis, confidence quickly eroded, causing depositors to withdraw 68% of funds within the final quarter of 2022. The bank resorted to selling securities at substantial losses to fulfill redemptions, ultimately leading to its liquidation.

In contrast, Erebor is consciously building a large liquidity buffer to prevent similar vulnerabilities.

Erebor’s policies mark a distinct departure from Silvergate’s approach, with the bank prioritizing deposit safety and immediate fund availability over lending income.

Expanding role of blockchain settlements

Erebor’s charter from regulators permits limited crypto holdings for transaction fees and paves the way for future blockchain-based settlement options and 24/7 payment services. The strategy aims to place the bank at the intersection of regulated deposits, stablecoins, and non-stop global crypto markets.

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) estimates the stablecoin sector reached a market capitalization of around $320 billion by May 2026. BIS cautioned that broad stablecoin use could impact traditional banks’ funding models, liquidity profiles, and demand for US dollar assets.

Mini dictionary: The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is an international financial institution that supports central banks’ cooperation and monetary policy stability.

Asia’s accelerating crypto transaction growth

International opportunities for crypto banking continue to expand. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) found blockchain-based transactions in Asia increased 69% year on year as of June 2025, the fastest pace globally.

Even as Erebor builds a stronger liquidity position than Silvergate once had, the risk remains that crypto-linked deposits can move at unprecedented speed during times of uncertainty.

While Erebor’s foundation is built to handle rapid fund flows, the definitive test will come if a significant withdrawal wave occurs in volatile markets.

Erebor’s future resilience will depend on its ability to withstand such stress while maintaining growth in a highly dynamic sector.
