The US dollar index (DXY) climbed to an 18-month high, signaling increased pressure on Bitcoin and other risk assets. As of the latest data, Bitcoin traded at $82,490, recording a 1.62% decline in the previous 24 hours.
Dollar strength and Bitcoin price movement
Over the past week, Bitcoin’s value retreated by 4.61%, with its market capitalization hovering near $1.65 trillion. The recent drop followed the dollar index’s rise above 102.50, its highest level since April 2025. This surge in the greenback emphasizes the ongoing challenge for crypto investors.
The US dollar index, which tracks the currency’s performance against six major currencies, recently displayed a breakout pattern. After starting around 102.12, it reached 102.55 and maintained higher highs and higher lows, suggesting persistent bullish momentum.
Rising oil prices negatively affected major oil-importing economies such as Europe and Japan, further undermining their currencies against the dollar. The move reflects ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty and is adding downward pressure to alternative assets like Bitcoin.
Federal Reserve policy has also played a key role. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack stated that maintaining a restrictive monetary approach was necessary to address persistent inflation concerns in the US economy.
Market data points to increased derivatives activity
Growing volatility was also evident in the derivatives market. CoinGlass, an analytics provider specializing in crypto derivatives, reported a significant uptick in activity as Bitcoin’s price continued to drop.
The trading volume in Bitcoin futures over the last 24 hours stood at $43.55 billion, while total open interest, or the sum of all active futures contracts, reached $52.25 billion. These figures indicate substantial leveraged exposure in the market.
Liquidations remained prominent, with $54.76 million in total Bitcoin positions closed due to margin calls over the past 24 hours. Of this amount, $43.22 million involved long positions, while $11.54 million came from short positions. Nearly 79% of all liquidations were long, exposing the vulnerability of bullish traders during the latest downturn.

As Bitcoin’s price falls, recent derivatives data show a surge in leveraged trading activity, indicating increased risk for bullish traders as long positions face heavy liquidations.
Upcoming data and Bitcoin’s macro environment
Traders are now closely watching the upcoming US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, scheduled for release on Wednesday. This data could influence expectations regarding the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy decisions and further sway both forex and crypto markets.
Despite occasional periods where Bitcoin and the dollar move independently, analysts note that prolonged strength in the greenback often complicates efforts by crypto bulls to establish upward momentum.
