A growing chorus of researchers and security experts in the cryptocurrency sector is raising alarms over the potential for artificial intelligence-powered advances to crack the cryptographic signatures that underpin most blockchain networks. The discussion centers on the possibility that sophisticated AI could help discover mathematical vulnerabilities in elliptic curve cryptography (ECC), endangering the private keys that control billions in digital assets.

Warnings about AI-driven attacks

Ethereum researcher Justin Drake suggested the industry needs to consider “bunker mode” preparations after recent developments in artificial intelligence, which could accelerate the discovery of attacks that might compromise cryptographic systems. Drake, who has contributed extensively to Ethereum’s protocol development, argued that AI might uncover security flaws in ECC using classical computing, independent of the much-discussed future threats posed by quantum computers.

He called for a controlled migration of crypto assets to fresh blockchain addresses with non-exposed public keys to limit information available to potential attackers. “There is a humbling rate of advancement in AI—enough to start planning for a worst-case scenario,” Drake stated.

Drake warns that the mathematical structure of elliptic curves could make them especially vulnerable to AI-driven breakthroughs, raising the stakes for networks that depend on this technology.

Matthew Green, a cryptography professor at Johns Hopkins University, agreed that public key cryptography could be at risk. He said the community might face the loss of core security assumptions sooner than many expect.

However, some voices urge restraint. Yehuda Lindell, Coinbase’s head of cryptography, sees no credible evidence that ECC’s foundational math has been weakened. Lucien Bourdon, Bitcoin analyst at wallet manufacturer Trezor, also downplayed imminent risk, pointing out that none of OpenAI’s latest mathematics research papers report successful attacks on ECDSA, the signature scheme used by Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Limits of defensive migration and technical measures

Zach Herbert, CEO and co-founder of hardware wallet FoundationHQ, warned that moving coins to new addresses may not protect users if an extended public key (xpub) was already shared with a wallet app or service provider. In such cases, attackers could regenerate all related addresses, making migration ineffective.

MetaMask founder and CEO Taylor Monahan noted that if ECC ever becomes practically breakable, attackers could recover private keys directly, even from hardware wallets. Eli Ben-Sasson, CEO of the Ethereum Layer 2 protocol StarkWare, said the risks extend beyond wallet signatures to infrastructure-level components, such as blockchain consensus and critical data-handling mechanisms like the Kate-Zaverucha-Goldberg (KZG) polynomial commitment scheme.

Mini dictionary: KZG polynomial commitment scheme, a cryptographic protocol used in Ethereum for securely committing to and verifying polynomial data, playing a pivotal role in data availability and blob storage following Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade.

Bitcoin does provide some extra defense: widely used SegWit addresses keep public keys hidden until funds are spent, limiting the attack window if hash functions remain robust. However, Taproot addresses expose public keys directly on chain, increasing risk if ECC is compromised. Bourdon advised against panic moves, noting that rushed migrations often lead to mistakes and can make users vulnerable to scams.

Shifting to quantum-resistant solutions

Some blockchain protocols are already experimenting with quantum- and AI-resistant solutions. NEAR Protocol users can add quantum-safe keys to their accounts, supported by wallet software like Meteor, through integration of lattice-based cryptography. Ethereum’s roadmap includes plans for hash-based signatures, zero-knowledge proof aggregation, and emergency hard forks to recover compromised funds. Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s founder, previously outlined a proposal for rolling back theft-affected blocks and restoring user balances through zero-knowledge proofs.

Bitwise Europe senior research associate Max Shannon said these solutions remain in the planning stage; there is no implementation timeline. He advises users to consider switching to quantum-safe signatures over the long term but notes no existing attacks have threatened ECC yet.

BlockchainCurrent ProtectionQuantum-Safe Plans
EthereumECC, ECDSAHash-based signatures, ZK proof aggregation, emergency hard fork
BitcoinSegWit (hidden public keys), Taproot (exposed keys)No major on-chain plan, relies on hash function strength
NEAR ProtocolSupports FIPS-204 keysLattice-based cryptography, quantum-safe signing
SolanaPublic keys exposed by designPilot for hash-based proofs, planned network upgrade

Industry reaction remains divided

Developers of advanced signature schemes like account abstraction (Starknet) assert that their system allows users to change the security algorithms associated with their accounts without moving funds. However, Ben-Sasson cautioned that other parts of the technology stack remain dependent on potentially vulnerable components, often tied to Ethereum’s security guarantees.

Not all experts are convinced radical action is needed yet. “Nothing to do right now,” Bourdon commented, stressing that poorly planned migrations can cause more harm than good. He also questioned whether warning about an unproven threat might serve to indirectly promote Ethereum’s move toward more advanced cryptography.

Despite the warnings, there is still no evidence that ECDSA is about to be broken, and experts caution against hasty reactions that could expose users to needless risk.

As the debate continues, many agree on the importance of researching quantum- and AI-resistant solutions, though widespread updates or mass asset migrations do not appear imminent. Any compromise of cryptography at the heart of crypto wallets and blockchains would present an unprecedented challenge for the entire sector.
