Agentic commerce emerges as a major crypto use case

Chainalysis, a global leader in blockchain data analytics, highlighted the rise of “agentic commerce” as one of the fastest-growing applications in the cryptocurrency sector. This trend centers on software-based AI agents independently carrying out transactions to pay for digital services.

The firm’s latest report, released as part of its annual Geography of Crypto series, focuses on North America’s $3 trillion crypto economy. The research shows AI agents are increasingly being assigned budgets by developers to buy computing power, access live internet data, and purchase coding tools in real time. Most transactions involve micro-payments, with over 87% of activity ranging from a hundredth of a cent to 10 cents—amounts commonly handled by stablecoins but not supported by traditional card infrastructure.

AI agents are already spending real money in the crypto economy, often making purchases for services that demand small, frequent payments—something stablecoins are uniquely able to support while conventional card systems cannot.

Transaction volumes have grown dramatically, rising from about 1,500 cumulative payments on x402’s Base network in mid-2025 to over 138 million by Q3 2026. This reflects rapid adoption among developers seeking to automate purchases with on-chain payments.

Mini dictionary: x402 Protocol: An open protocol developed by Coinbase enabling software agents to send and receive cryptocurrency payments automatically on blockchain networks. It is designed to facilitate machine-to-machine transactions.

US dominates agent-related crypto activity

The United States accounts for the overwhelming majority of this agent-driven activity. Wallets linked to US users made up 88.1% of geographically identified AI model inference payments, while China trailed with just 0.1%. However, Chinese-linked wallets were most prominent in paying for security and code-analysis services.

Chainalysis emphasized that these figures represent only identifiable x402 protocol transactions and may not reflect the entire global picture. The company advised caution in interpreting the gap between regions.

Growing institutional focus and persistent doubts

Infrastructure supporting AI agent payments continues to mature. Major payments companies including Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe have announced support for transactions carried out by AI agents. Coinbase, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges, introduced tools that allow both agents and businesses to send, receive, and process such payments. Google also launched a dedicated protocol specifically designed for agent payments.

Asset management giant BlackRock has indicated that autonomous agents could drive new demand for cryptocurrencies. Will Su, BlackRock’s head of digital assets research, noted their team is tracking developments in automated, low-value, high-frequency payments that AI agents may generate.

BlackRock’s Will Su said that meaningful demand for continuous micro-payments from AI agents could reshape crypto markets, adding significant volume to the ecosystem.

However, not all observers are convinced. Previous research by crypto analytics startup TRM suggested that a portion of x402 activity might stem from scripts or “self-dealing” transactions, rather than genuine autonomous agents. This raises questions about how much economic activity is truly driven by AI.

Despite these uncertainties, the surge in transaction numbers suggests the next wave of crypto users may be digital agents rather than people.
