The cryptocurrency market saw its largest wave of forced margin position liquidations since August during the overnight session on October 15, as a sharp price drop triggered the closure of leveraged positions across major digital assets.
Massive liquidations sweep through the market
Daily liquidation volume across the market reached $939.3 million, with data from CoinGlass showing that holders of long positions accounted for $791.62 million, or 84.3%, of the total losses. Significant price declines led to a rapid unwinding of speculative positions in the derivatives market, reducing overall leverage.
Bitcoin and Ethereum traders bore the brunt of the liquidations, losing $215.49 million and $286.11 million respectively. The largest single liquidation involved a long position in the BTC-USDT trading pair on Binance, valued at $12.03 million and executed at a price of $80,208.96. Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, was responsible for 52.3% of all closed orders during the episode.
Altcoins favored by retail investors also suffered, with XRP, NEAR Protocol, and Dogecoin recording daily forced closure volumes of $12.82 million, $12.32 million, and $12.18 million respectively. For the altcoin sector, which had seen steady gains in recent months, this event marked the first significant correction in an extended period.
| Asset | Liquidations ($ million) |
|---|---|
| Ethereum (ETH) | 286.11 |
| Bitcoin (BTC) | 215.49 |
| XRP | 12.82 |
| NEAR Protocol | 12.32 |
| Dogecoin (DOGE) | 12.18 |

Technical dynamics and recovery signals
Despite the intensity of the liquidations, technical indicators suggest that the move did not signal a broader shift in market trend. Bitcoin’s price briefly dipped to the area of its 50-day moving average, approximately $81,000, before attracting strong buying interest. The psychological level of $80,000 served as a floor, and the longer-term 200-day moving average support remained lower at $72,000, reinforcing the current bullish structure.
A rapid rebound soon followed, including a short squeeze that saw prices for BTC and ETH swiftly recover. Panic selling among retail traders resulted in many opening short positions near the local low, only for these to be liquidated as prices bounced back. Within just one hour, Bitcoin sellers lost $15.94 million, representing 95.2% of all hourly liquidations for the asset, while Ethereum short sellers saw $19.41 million in losses. Short sellers in NEAR and Dogecoin faced similar wipeouts as the market quickly reversed.
Currently, funding rates for leading perpetual futures contracts remain positive, between 0.005% and 0.009%, indicating continued mid-term bullish sentiment among market participants even after the cleanout of excessive leverage.
Ongoing sentiment in the aftermath
This liquidation event underscored both the volatility inherent in highly leveraged crypto derivatives and the resilience of bullish sentiment at key technical levels. Market observers note that while periodic sharp corrections are common in crypto markets, the rapid absorption of sell pressure and recovery in prices suggest that investors retain confidence in the prevailing uptrend.
Long liquidations reached $791.62 million out of the total $939.3 million in the latest wave, with Ethereum and Bitcoin traders facing the largest losses. Binance executed over half of all closed positions, underscoring its dominant role in the market’s liquidation dynamics.
