As countries continue exploring alternatives to reduce dependence on the US dollar, Phil Kwok, co-founder of EasyA—a prominent platform focused on blockchain education—suggested that XRP’s original mission should be reconsidered. Kwok argued that XRP can enable cross-border payments between different currencies without linking transactions to any particular government.

XRP’s design as a bridge asset

According to Kwok, the XRP Ledger was created to solve inefficiencies in exchanging money between various fiat currencies. Traditional currency exchange often requires access to pairs with high liquidity. When these pairs lack sufficient volume, transactions become costly or complicated for users seeking to move value internationally.

The XRP Ledger uses a mechanism known as auto-bridging, allowing XRP to serve as an intermediary asset when exchanging two less liquid currencies. This setup can link markets that otherwise lack robust direct trading pairs and could lead to broader financial connectivity.

Kwok described XRP as intentionally built for this global intermediary role.

“The world needs a neutral bridge currency, and XRP was designed exactly for that. The question now is what happens as the landscape shifts,” he stated.

The auto-bridging feature stands out for its ability to facilitate transactions across otherwise fragmented currency markets.

Stablecoins: Limits and unanswered questions

Acknowledging the growing popularity of stablecoins, Kwok noted examples such as RLUSD—a stablecoin pegged to the US dollar and issued by a Ripple subsidiary. These digital assets let users transfer and retain dollar-based value without needing a US bank account, offering convenience in global commerce.

Despite this, Kwok raised concerns over scenarios in which two parties wish to transact without involving a currency tied to any national government. In such cases, stablecoins may not offer a truly neutral medium of exchange.

“There needs to be something in the middle unaffiliated with any specific government, and XRP is positioned for this role,” he emphasized.

This perspective highlights the ongoing debate within the crypto sector over the need for a digital asset capable of bridging multiple monetary systems.

Geopolitical tensions and growing demand

Kwok believes that rising geopolitical tensions could accelerate the search for alternative payment systems. Drawing a parallel with the global shift to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic, he suggested that international disputes may act as a catalyst for the adoption of new financial technologies.

Crypto advocate John Squire expressed a similar opinion, highlighting that XRP was envisioned as a neutral bridge long before most market participants recognized the potential need. Squire cautioned that real-world adoption remains the true test ahead.

Kwok argued that geopolitical shifts increase the relevance of a neutral bridge asset, but also stated that demand alone does not guarantee XRP’s widespread adoption among financial institutions. The asset’s technical abilities for currency-to-currency transfers offer significant promise, yet actual take-up from banks and payment providers will ultimately determine its importance in the global system.

The outcome depends on whether financial institutions are willing to embrace XRP for its intended cross-border function. Sustained adoption, rather than just technical capability, will decide the extent of the asset’s impact.
