Bitcoin traded within a tight range over the weekend, as traders weighed ongoing institutional outflows against evidence of strong buy-side support near the $80,000 threshold.

Forecasting platform CoinLab assigned a 55% probability that Bitcoin would stay between $80,600 and $82,900 by Saturday’s close, using its AI-powered price models. The analysis placed the 20-day exponential moving average around $82,700, which may act as resistance in the near term.

At 1:46 a.m. Eastern Time, Bitcoin changed hands near $81,615 as traditional equity markets, especially technology stocks, experienced renewed weakness. This price action suggested that crypto markets were responding to broader risk sentiment.

CoinLab pinpointed the $80,000 to $81,500 area as notable support. That region is reinforced by the typical purchase price of Bitcoin ETF investors and significant buy orders on Binance, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges.

If buyers fail to hold the support zone, the models show a 27% chance of a pullback targeting $78,500 to $80,600. Conversely, an 18% chance is assigned to an upside move toward $82,900 to $84,400, with the prior weekly peak near $84,350 cited as a key reference.

While CoinLab’s model-based probabilities reflect statistical estimates, they are not independently validated guarantees.

Institutional outflows pressure Bitcoin

Bitcoin’s near-term prospects are clouded by renewed net outflows from US-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds. According to Farside Investors, cumulative ETF outflows reached $82.4 million on October 16, reversing a brief $5.1 million inflow recorded the day before.

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), one of the industry’s largest spot Bitcoin ETFs, saw withdrawals totaling $71.8 million on Friday. Fidelity’s FBTC ETF lost $10.6 million during the same session.

ETF NameNet Outflow (Oct 16)
BlackRock IBIT$71.8 million
Fidelity FBTC$10.6 million
All Bitcoin ETFs$82.4 million

Between October 12 and 16, total redemptions in Bitcoin ETFs reached nearly $228.4 million. On October 14 alone, investors pulled $261.4 million from such funds. These ETF outflows indicate net reductions in investment product holdings, though they do not immediately translate to spot market selling of equivalent Bitcoin amounts.

Persistent negative flows may undermine a key source of institutional demand, especially during periods of heightened volatility.

Liquidity risks amid heavy futures positioning

CoinLab cautioned that low weekend liquidity and aggressive derivatives activity could add to Bitcoin’s volatility. The model’s October 17 report found that perpetual futures funding rates on Binance were trending above their monthly average, meaning traders were paying a premium to keep leveraged long positions open.

Such one-sided positioning can increase market vulnerability, because rapid price declines often trigger forced liquidations that intensify sell-offs. Earlier this week, Bitcoin dipped below $82,000 following a rush of futures liquidations, illustrating how leveraged traders can be caught by sudden moves.

For the immediate future, analysts are monitoring the $80,000 support closely. A sustained breakdown could validate CoinLab’s $78,500 downside case, while a move above $82,900 would open the way for a push toward $84,400.

The probability-driven forecast is limited to October 17 and does not extend across the entire week. Bitcoin’s price action will depend on shifting spot demand, ETF flows, and whether buyers continue to protect the $80,000 threshold.
