Vandell, co-founder of Black Swan Capitalist, expressed confidence that XRP’s price can appreciate further without relying on greater utility, regulatory clarity, or widespread adoption. Black Swan Capitalist is an investment research firm specializing in digital asset analysis and strategy.
XRP price growth driven by scarcity and speculation
On X, Vandell pointed to XRP’s price history as evidence for his position. He argued that market forces such as scarcity, narrative, and speculation have historically driven the asset’s value. In his view, these forces may remain more influential than utility-based developments.
While not dismissing institutional adoption, Vandell described it as an additional source of demand rather than a necessity for price appreciation. He suggested that other dynamics, including the fixed supply and ongoing dollar-denominated inflation, play larger roles in determining price movements.
XRP does not need utility to go higher. According to Vandell, markets tend to price scarcity and narrative over utility, citing fixed supply, escrow mechanisms, perceived value, and overall asset inflation as primary drivers.
Vandell responded to inquiries from David Frank, who questioned how an asset without practical utility could rise in value. To illustrate his argument, the Black Swan Capitalist co-founder compared XRP’s steep rise from less than one cent to its all-time high—gaining over 115,000%—with Bitcoin’s growth from about $1 to roughly $126,000.
He attributed these increases to asset inflation within the debt-heavy global financial system, indicating that fundamental demand is often not a prerequisite for significant price appreciation.
Market factors beyond utility
Expanding on his thesis, Vandell emphasized that utility is not the sole driver of asset values in the cryptocurrency market. He listed scarcity, market sentiment, and macroeconomic factors such as dollar inflation as the most important contributors to price dynamics.
He pointed out XRP’s fixed supply and use of escrow arrangements as features that may appeal to investors. These characteristics could maintain upward pressure on the asset’s price, even if practical adoption lags behind expectations.
Although Vandell acknowledged that utility and institutional adoption could support further gains, he maintained that these are not the only relevant drivers for price performance.
Mini dictionary: Escrow mechanism, a structure where a portion of XRP is locked and released over time to help manage supply, intended to prevent flooding the market.
XRP community divided over the role of utility
Other members of the XRP community voiced disagreement. Trevor Wells argued that utility is directly linked to token value, challenging Vandell’s comparison with Bitcoin.
Another participant, FlowOverNoise, agreed that speculation can drive prices but noted that since 2017 the crypto market has evolved. This commenter emphasized the increasing relevance of asset tokenization and institutional liquidity needs, suggesting these factors make utility-oriented demand more important.
FlowOverNoise added that should financial institutions need to acquire and hold XRP for liquidity transfer or reserves, demand arising from use cases could become a larger driver for price movement than mere speculation.
This debate underscores the existence of two distinct views within the XRP community. While some believe that speculation, scarcity, and broader economic trends will continue as the main price drivers, others emphasize long-term utility and real-world adoption as crucial for future growth.
Speculation, scarcity, and macroeconomic factors may continue to affect prices for $XRP, but some analysts believe that expanding utility and institutional adoption could have a growing impact over time.
