Tokenized shares of Securitize (SECZ) lost more than half their value within the past month, as market leader Circle (CRCL) widened its advantage in the growing tokenized stock sector.
Sharp decline in SECZ market cap
According to blockchain analytics provider Token Terminal, the combined market capitalization of SECZ tokens dropped from a peak of $430.4 million on September 28 to $208.6 million by Sunday.
Shares of Securitize, which are listed on the New York Stock Exchange, also declined, closing Friday at $7.80 with a market capitalization of $1.27 billion. While SECZ enjoyed a surge following the launch of its stock trading platform on the Solana blockchain on October 8, that momentum faded as selling pressure mounted.
Securitize is a New York-based company specializing in providing tokenization solutions for asset managers, including large institutions like BlackRock. The firm’s move to bring its own shares onchain after its July 2 listing on the NYSE initially positioned SECZ as the largest tokenized equity.
On October 13, investment bank Citi moved to downgrade SECZ shares from Buy to Neutral, raising doubts over the outlook for tokenization-related revenue at the company.
Securitize’s shares reversed their early gains as Citi cited concerns about the firm’s tokenization income, shifting its recommendation to Neutral.
Circle regains lead in tokenized stocks
Tokens tracking shares of Circle, a major stablecoin issuer and fintech firm, increased by approximately 20% in market value since September 28, rising to $383.6 million. This growth allowed Circle to retake the lead in the $3.3 billion tokenized stock market.
The strength of Circle’s position is drawn from multiple product offerings issued by various companies, rather than a single token. Binance’s CRCLb, a tokenized representation of Circle’s stock on the BNB Chain, makes up $154.1 million of the total CRCL value.
SECZ continues to stand as the largest individual tokenized stock, but Circle’s share is more distributed across separate issuers.
Tokenized stocks enable investors to access shares of public companies in the form of digital assets, allowing for fractional ownership and easier cross-border trading.
Mini dictionary: Tokenized stocks are blockchain-based digital tokens that represent shares in publicly traded companies, enabling traditional financial assets to be traded on blockchain platforms.
| Tokenized Stock | Market Cap (Sept. 28) | Market Cap (Sunday) | Monthly Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| SECZ | $430.4 million | $208.6 million | -52% |
| CRCL | $319.7 million | $383.6 million | +20% |
Circle’s rapid gain in tokenized market capitalization allowed it to recapture the top spot, while SECZ’s sharp drop highlighted volatility in onchain equities.
Current outlook for tokenized equities
Data from Token Terminal shows that the overall capitalization for tokenized stocks, excluding exchange-traded funds, has reached $3.3 billion. SECZ remains the largest individually issued tokenized stock despite its sharp decline, while Circle now leads the sector thanks to diverse issuance on multiple blockchain platforms.
