A new wave of digital art is emerging as generative artist BitArt pushes the boundaries of creativity in the crypto space with the project Mosaic, using the Bitcoin blockchain as both inspiration and material. Unveiled through the Bitcoin Art Society (BAS), Mosaic transforms the smallest unit of bitcoin, known as satoshis, into visual and sonic compositions, creating a continually evolving digital mosaic that explores alternative ways to preserve and experience art.

Mosaic: Art from Bitcoin’s foundation

Rather than drawing on traditional Bitcoin symbols, Mosaic employs numerical properties of satoshis and unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs) to determine each tile’s color and position in the digital artwork. The project builds on the principles of conceptual and generative art, reminiscent of artists such as Sol LeWitt, Vera Molnár, and Manfred Mohr, who used rule-based systems to generate unique visual experiences. Here, Bitcoin’s underlying transaction data offers the rules that guide the development of the artwork.

BitArt explained that the advent of the Ordinals protocol—allowing for the assignment of unique numbers to every satoshi—made this project possible: “Once every satoshi has an assigned ordinal number, it becomes relatively straightforward to determine its position and derive its color or musical parameters through a set of rules.”

Over time, Mosaic has grown dramatically. According to BitArt, there are already more than 127 million tiles and one billion layers in the project. To view every layer at a rate of one per second would take over 30 years, illustrating the massive scale and complexity of the work.

Mini dictionary: Ordinals protocol, introduced in early 2023, enables the unique identification and tracking of each individual satoshi on the Bitcoin blockchain—allowing creators to inscribe data, such as NFTs or metadata, directly on single satoshis.

Expanding art to sound and collaboration

Mosaic is not limited to visual elements. Its musical aspect draws from the same data, translating the numerical properties of satoshis into evolving soundtracks. This dual approach results in an audiovisual experience, shaped both by blockchain data and human contributions.

The BAS, founded by Serge Ajamian and Yara Al Chammaa, supports digital art creation, exhibition, and preservation on the Bitcoin network. Inspired by the 2020 Beirut Port explosion, which destroyed much of Al Chammaa’s family gallery collection, BAS pursues ways to safeguard cultural heritage beyond the vulnerabilities of physical institutions.

As part of its mission, BAS has showcased Bitcoin-native art around the world, including immersive presentations of Mosaic at the Galileo Galilei Planetarium in Buenos Aires. The organization’s inaugural artist residency features BitArt and CyberSea, two artists focused on generative art and blockchain-native production.

Collective authorship and technological challenges

BitArt views Mosaic as a collaborative project, blurring the lines between creator and participant. Each transaction on the Bitcoin network can change Mosaic’s structure, with all contributors sharing in the development of the artwork. This raises broader questions around the definition of authorship and permanence in a software-based art world, where the code, participation, and viewing experience all shape the identity of the work.

BitArt stated, “Authorship becomes less about controlling an outcome and more about establishing the conditions under which it can emerge.”

Beyond technological endurance, Mosaic challenges museums and galleries to find new ways to archive both the artwork and the experience surrounding it. The piece exists as a process—constantly updated by Bitcoin’s transactions and participants—rather than a single, static object.

Exhibitions and future directions

Mosaic’s presence continues to expand, set to appear on the main-stage LED installation at Bitcoin Amsterdam 2026. This large-scale display will bring the project’s intricate digital patterns to life before a global audience, echoing previous BAS exhibitions that merge digital art and immersive environments.

Alongside its evolving nature, Mosaic is at the forefront of blockchain art’s dialogue with traditional and new media alike. The project opens up possibilities for artworks to communicate, collaborate, and even reference each other through machine-readable languages, breaking new ground in the art world’s understanding of interactivity and influence.

BitArt emphasized that Mosaic’s algorithm is designed to be simple and deterministic, but the immense number of layers and continuous input from Bitcoin’s economic activity produce results that are often unexpected, challenging any single individual’s ability to fully anticipate or comprehend them.
