Binance, recognized as the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by daily trading volume, experienced a significant security breach that analysts estimate resulted in the loss of nearly $6 billion worth of digital assets. Blockchain analytics firm Glassnode reported that the initial value of suspicious outflows was approximately $5.3 billion, but subsequent transactions brought the tally closer to $5.9 billion as the investigation continued.
Scale and Structure of the Breach
According to Glassnode, the breach involved substantial amounts of several major cryptocurrencies, with hackers transferring around $1.66 billion in Tether (USDT), 17,985 Bitcoin (BTC) valued at nearly $1.45 billion, and $767 million in USD Coin (USDC) out of wallets linked to Binance.
Additional tokens moved in the attack included Ethereum (ETH), XRP, Solana (SOL), and Tron (TRX). Analysts observed that suspicious outflows were conducted sequentially, with XRP leaving Binance-linked wallets first, followed by SOL, BTC, and others.

Despite the scale of the incident, Binance’s BNB token reserves were reportedly unaffected. Analysts continue to monitor the movement of the stolen assets, noting that total losses remain uncertain as funds are quickly shifted between blockchain addresses.
Response from Binance and Industry Leaders
Changpeng Zhao, Binance’s co-founder and former CEO, addressed the breach publicly and reassured users regarding the safety of their holdings. While acknowledging the scale of the incident, Zhao stated:
It does look like a hack on Binance… I’m not running Binance anymore, but as a shareholder, I expect all user funds will be fully covered.
He expressed confidence in the response by key stablecoin issuers and suggested that the final losses could be higher than initial estimates. At the same time, he reiterated that users would be made whole.
Both Tether and Circle, major stablecoin issuers, intervened rapidly. Tether’s CEO Paolo Ardoino reported that his company had frozen over 1.567 billion USDT linked to the Binance breach, highlighting the priority of industry security and partnership protection.
Protecting the industry and our partners is our main priority, Ardoino stated.
Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire confirmed that more than $800 million in USDC had also been frozen with law enforcement cooperation. Binance confirmed that, in total, frozen assets reached $2.54 billion, warning that this amount could rise as investigations continue.
Market Reaction and Previous Incidents
If confirmed, the magnitude of this breach would surpass previous industry records, including the February 2025 Bybit hack, where about $1.5 billion in Ethereum was stolen in an attack attributed to North Korean-based cybercriminals.
| Exchange | Loss Amount | Date | Main Assets Involved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Binance | $5.9 billion | 2025 | USDT, BTC, USDC, ETH, XRP, SOL, TRX |
| Bybit | $1.5 billion | 2025 | ETH |
In the immediate aftermath, the broader cryptocurrency market experienced sharp declines. Bitcoin slipped temporarily below $79,000, Ethereum dropped under $2,300, and XRP tumbled by nearly 7%. Binance’s own BNB token recorded a similar decline of about 7% as initial responses unfolded.
