Hedera, a public distributed ledger platform, has drawn significant attention with its native token HBAR commanding a multibillion-dollar market value. However, data analyzed by crypto research group Fire Hustle shows that Hedera collects only a few hundred dollars in daily network fees, prompting questions surrounding the relationship between enterprise adoption and actual token demand.

Institutional activity and network economics

Fire Hustle’s analysis explores whether banks utilizing Hedera’s technology will need to maintain substantial HBAR reserves or if they simply benefit from the protocol’s cost-effective infrastructure. The core concern revolves around the practical necessity of token holdings for institutional users.

Taurus, a digital asset infrastructure provider, has recently integrated Hedera into its platform, which serves over 40 banks and regulated institutions. This partnership enables clients to access HBAR custody, staking, and token issuance services. However, Fire Hustle points out that mere access to these services does not mean participating institutions are actively holding large HBAR amounts or have launched token-related products.

Hedera structures its transaction fees in US dollars but collects payment in HBAR tokens. As HBAR’s price fluctuates, the number of tokens needed to fulfill the same dollar fee also changes. This mechanism stabilizes costs for enterprise users but limits pressure on token demand, especially when total fees remain relatively minimal.

Fee predictability for businesses reduces operational uncertainty, but the small scale of network fees keeps upward pressure on HBAR relatively muted, even as transaction activity increases.

Evaluating sources of HBAR demand

Fire Hustle’s video scrutinizes which market participants are required to hold HBAR and in what amounts. Staking and maintaining operational token inventories are cited as potential avenues creating demand, but there is no concrete evidence that institutional users must retain significant HBAR holdings within current integrations.

These dynamics challenge widespread assumptions that increased adoption will directly translate to higher token value through organic demand. Instead, the analysis notes that institutional partners may choose to use Hedera primarily as a low-cost infrastructure solution.

Banks, connectors, and the Swift question

Attention has also turned to CLPR, described by Fire Hustle as a cryptographic technology allowing different financial networks to verify records without intermediaries holding funds. This technology, contributed by Hedera’s founding company Swirlds (which developed the Hashgraph consensus mechanism), was recently given to the Linux Foundation as part of a broader payments and settlement initiative.

An early-adopter program was created to target sectors such as payments, foreign exchange, and collateral transfers. Notably, global payments leader Swift and US bank Wells Fargo joined the Linux Foundation on the same day as the CLPR contribution, sparking speculation about possible implementations.

However, Fire Hustle stresses that there has been no official confirmation of Swift integrating or deploying the Clipper technology. Shared foundation membership is not equivalent to an active partnership or live project.

Hedera is also listed as a participant in a UK tokenization initiative involving an on-chain repo trial scheduled for April 2027. This effort, led by BlackRock and NatWest, features various contributors, but there is no confirmation that Hedera or CLPR will power the project. Other significant partners include Ripple, Coinbase, and Circle.

Mini dictionary: CLPR (Clipper) is a protocol contributed to the Linux Foundation, aimed at enabling cryptographic verification of records between diverse financial networks without requiring intermediaries to hold funds, promoting interoperability in payments and asset movements.

Industry context and recent developments

Amid ongoing industry innovation, Hedera continues to participate in high-profile projects but faces scrutiny over whether institutional adoption is driving real token demand. Fire Hustle’s analysis cautions investors to monitor the difference between network-building activity and direct HBAR accumulation by major institutions.

Elsewhere in the blockchain sector, new tokenization and custody solutions are emerging from players like DTCC and major AI firms, reflecting rapid expansion of token-based financial infrastructure, though direct impacts on Hedera’s token economics remain unclear.
