Alleged North Korean hackers drained $6.3 billion from Binance in just 20 minutes last week, marking the largest crypto exchange hack ever recorded. According to Binance, the attackers exploited multiple sophisticated methods, including fake job interviews, compromised code libraries, and advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools, leaving much of the crypto sector on alert for similar threats.

AI-Powered Attacks and Deceptive Employment Tactics

North Korea-linked hacking groups have become increasingly adept at infiltrating cryptocurrency firms by posing as job candidates using fake identities. These attackers leverage convincing deepfake technology during interviews, allowing them to change their appearance and voice in real time. Binance’s chief security officer, Jimmy Su, described North Korean actors as the most persistent threat his company faces, revealing that Binance filters out suspected resumes originating from North Korea on a daily basis.

Su explained that despite these preventative measures, some malicious applicants proceed to video calls, where poor internet connections often give away the use of translation software and voice changers. He noted that North Korean operatives are sometimes among a company’s best performers, as multiple individuals may rotate through a single role to evade detection across time zones.

Binance’s Jimmy Su highlighted that “almost all the large DPRK hacks” had involved employees hired under false identities to facilitate attacks.

The threat continues to escalate. In 2026, Binance detected and blocked 57 suspected North Korea-linked incidents using a mix of fraudulent job interviews and fake conferencing applications. Attackers have also reversed the scam, pretending to be recruiters and targeting key personnel at crypto companies, often sending malicious links disguised as software updates.

Fake Interviews and International Scale of Attacks

A recurring pattern involves North Korean operatives staging elaborate job recruitment schemes. In one recent instance, a Binance engineer was contacted via a legitimate hiring platform and subjected to a two-part interview process. The first phase featured a so-called HR representative sharing authentic-looking social media content, while the second required downloading an assignment laced with hidden malware. This new malware was effective enough to evade Binance’s security protocols, ultimately enabling unauthorized access to an internal wallet signing service.

Beyond Binance, one group, identified as WaterPlum or Contagious Interview, infiltrated at least 30,000 devices in over 100 countries between December 2025 and July 2026. According to a joint advisory by agencies from four countries, the group stole credentials or funds from more than 7,000 cryptocurrency wallets, diverting $10.71 million to North Korea. The attackers typically posed as AI, crypto, or NFT companies, requiring prospective employees to download files that ultimately installed malware.

Mini dictionary: WaterPlum or Contagious Interview refers to a North Korean-linked hacking organization known for using fake job interviews and malware-infected coding tasks to compromise crypto wallets and siphon funds to Pyongyang.

Poisoned Code Libraries and Infrastructure Weaknesses

Beyond infiltration through employment, North Korean threat actors also poison open-source code libraries and manipulate critical developer tools. According to Su, these tactics are second only to fake hiring in frequency. In 2025, cybersecurity firm ReversingLabs identified two Node Package Manager (NPM) packages, colortoolsv2 and mimelib2, that leveraged Ethereum smart contracts to distribute malware, representing a new level of sophistication. These packages interconnected with a broader network of repositories, commonly disguised as crypto trading bots, and successfully bypassed many security checks.

Mini dictionary: Node Package Manager (NPM) is a widely used package manager for JavaScript that allows developers to install reusable open-source code modules. Attackers exploit its popularity to distribute compromised libraries embedding malicious code.

ReversingLabs found that these NPM packages used Ethereum smart contracts to download malware, indicating a shift in how threat actors execute attacks through publicly available code.

The Binance hack also involved a compromised installation of Homebrew, a popular developer tool, which introduced additional risk to the exchange’s wallet infrastructure team. Similar techniques contributed to a previous $1.4 billion breach at Bybit in early 2025, where attackers injected malicious JavaScript into the third-party infrastructure of Safe, a wallet provider used by the exchange.

AI’s Expanding Role and Security Implications

Artificial intelligence is rapidly amplifying the threat landscape. Google and Binance have both identified campaigns by North Korean groups utilizing AI to craft more persuasive phishing schemes, automate deepfake interviews, and streamline malware development. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin warned that it is plausible AI could compromise current encryption methods within two years, noting major advancements in AI-driven mathematics by firms such as OpenAI.

While there is no confirmation that North Korean hackers have successfully used AI to break encryption, the industry remains vigilant as these actors swiftly adopt the latest technology. Security professionals urge robust monitoring, employee training, and scrutiny of all code contributions to prevent further high-profile breaches.
