Crisis is nothing new in the world of decentralized finance, but the industry is drawing attention for the scale of solidarity mobilized after the recent Kelp DAO exploit on Aave. Since the attack, leading figures from across the sector have pledged nearly $303 million to support recovery efforts. The majority of these funds now await community approval before being deployed.
The rescue mission centers on Aave
Aave stands out as one of the largest lending protocols in the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Among its active governance proposals is one to allocate up to 250,000 ETH to the rescue effort. Aave’s founder, Stani Kulechov, has personally committed to donating 5,000 ETH, while Emilio Frangella from Aave, Ernesto Boado, and Marcelo Ruiz de Orlano from BGD Labs are also preparing individual contributions in ETH.
Because the attack created cascading risks in rsETH markets, the scope of the recovery plan is broad. Should the proposed fund receive community approval, the main goals will be to restore affected users’ losses and bring stability back to the markets.
Broad support and diverse models from the ecosystem
The call to support Aave quickly extended beyond just the immediate crypto sector. Following the incident, Stani Kulechov reached out directly to Consensys and several other key industry players. The crypto infrastructure company Consensys, along with its founder Joseph Lubin, announced readiness to provide financial backing totaling 30,000 ETH. Throughout this process, Sharplink positioned itself as an active advisor.
“DeFi United represents the broad and coordinated response needed to protect users and strengthen the infrastructure we’ve built. We are happy to work side by side with other responsible actors in the ecosystem,” Consensys representatives emphasized in their statement.
Other community members are also stepping up in various ways. Lido proposed allocating 2,500 stETH to the recovery cause, while EtherFi is discussing a support plan totaling 5,000 ETH for user protection. Mantle introduced a proposal for a 30,000 ETH credit line, and Compound offered to direct 3,000 ETH into the rescue fund.
Contributions are not limited to ETH alone—USDT and other crypto assets are involved as well. The Babylon Foundation is considering a deposit of $3 million in USDT to the Aave protocol, and Renzo has committed over $10 million from its treasury. In addition, Circle Ventures joined by acquiring AAVE tokens, while Avalanche, the Solana Foundation, Justin Sun, and various other crypto startups are now among the supporters.
Proposals, approvals, and diversity
Support from participating entities is being organized through a range of methods, including direct donations, deposits, and credit lines. Some groups prefer offering grants, while others choose to open credit or leave deposits within the protocol. This diversity reflects efforts to balance risk management with meaningful collaboration across the sector.
Aave Labs has also put forward a proposal to release approximately 30,765.67 ETH held by the Security Council on the Arbitrum network, to compensate victims holding rsETH. However, a significant portion of pledged funds still awaits approval by protocol governance mechanisms.
As more stakeholders become involved, the far-reaching impact of the incident on the decentralized finance ecosystem is becoming clearer. The process is still ongoing, with new contributors joining the effort each day and the scale of the rescue fund continuing to grow.
