aave v4 introduces hub and spoke architecture for flexible defi liquidity management

In Brief

  • Aave V4 has restructured its protocol with a hub and spoke architecture to manage liquidity and risk.

  • Liquidity Hubs hold user assets, while upgradeable Spokes handle actions like supplying and borrowing.

  • Credit lines and adjustable draw caps offer precise risk controls across decentralized markets within the protocol.

Aave V4, the newest iteration of the prominent decentralized lending protocol Aave, has redefined its underlying infrastructure with a hub and spoke model and a novel approach to liquidity management. This shift aims to improve upgradeability, risk control, and operational flexibility across multiple markets.

innovation through hubs and spokes

At the core of Aave V4’s redesign are Liquidity Hubs, which are smart contracts that hold digital assets deposited by users and track all balances supplied and borrowed within connected markets. The protocol has emphasized that these Hubs are immutable smart contracts, meaning their underlying code cannot be changed after deployment. This aspect is intended to provide a stable foundation and reduce potential technical risks that could arise from software upgrades. While Hubs themselves remain unchanged, new assets can be added through protocol governance, since this action is considered a state change rather than a code update.

Each blockchain network where Aave V4 is deployed can support several Hubs, which each have their own independent balance sheets. For example, the current Ethereum implementation includes three separate Hubs: Core, Prime, and Plus. These Hubs do not share accounting, allowing for market segmentation and risk isolation.

User-facing interactions such as supplying tokens, borrowing, repaying, or withdrawing occur through modular smart contracts known as Spokes. Each Spoke operates its own logic, including market specifications like collateral parameters and liquidation rules. A key design choice is that Spokes are upgradeable, allowing protocol governance to adjust market rules without affecting the core liquidity management layer maintained by the Hubs.

Aave was established in 2017 and has become a leading DeFi platform for lending and borrowing digital assets. Its DAO governs the protocol and guides technical and risk management developments.

credit lines and risk control mechanisms

The connection between a Spoke and a Hub is formalized through the concept of credit lines, which operate on a per-asset basis. For instance, one Spoke can interact with multiple assets from one Hub, and each pair forms a dedicated credit line. Each credit line features an enforceable draw cap, which controls the maximum liquidity a Spoke can access from a Hub for each asset.

Draw caps are enforced with each transaction and function similarly to borrow caps seen in earlier versions of the protocol. These caps can be adjusted by protocol governance, allowing them to be increased to provide greater market access or decreased to limit risk. Setting a draw cap to zero effectively halts new borrowing for an asset without forcing the closure of existing positions. This mechanism grants granular control over liquidity flows and risk exposures.

Some Spokes hold credit lines to more than one Hub, enabling them to access collateralized assets in one Hub while borrowing stablecoins or other digital assets from another. This configuration provides flexibility for users and allows the protocol to efficiently manage liquidity sources and market risks.

The introduction of the hub and spoke architecture and per-asset credit lines in Aave V4 presents a more modular and risk-calibrated framework for decentralized lending. Governance gains the ability to make targeted adjustments for individual assets and markets, enhancing both safety and adaptability for users in the rapidly evolving DeFi sector.
