Co-founder of the renowned social media platform Reddit, Alexis Ohanian, has initiated a move to acquire TikTok and restructure it using blockchain technology. Ohanian announced his participation in businessman Frank McCourt’s “Project Liberty” aimed at purchasing TikTok’s U.S. operations. McCourt’s plan seeks to transform TikTok into a decentralized social media platform, ensuring users have control over their data through a blockchain-based system.
Planned Blockchain Integration for TikTok and Project Liberty
Ohanian and McCourt have joined the list of bidders for TikTok’s U.S. operations. The U.S. government has claimed that TikTok’s ownership by the China-based company ByteDance poses a national security threat, demanding either its sale or shutdown.

McCourt’s “Project Liberty” aims to convert TikTok into a blockchain-based social media platform. Ohanian supports this process to enable users to own their data and allow content creators full control over their audience.
Ohanian’s Previous Ventures in Cryptocurrency
If the acquisition occurs, TikTok will utilize the Frequency blockchain infrastructure developed by Project Liberty. Frequency is defined as a blockchain network optimized for high-volume social media interactions and features a unique consensus mechanism to ensure compatibility between different social media applications.
Ohanian is known for his attempts to integrate blockchain technology with social media. In 2020, Reddit launched the “Community Points” system based on Ethereum $2,544 blockchain, rewarding active users in specific subreddits. These tokens were initially launched on Ethereum’s Rinkeby test network and later transferred to the Arbitrum Nova Layer 2 network.
Furthermore, Reddit has offered collectible NFT avatars on the Polygon blockchain and revealed that it holds ETH, BTC, and MATIC coin in its balance sheet. Ohanian’s venture capital firm, Seven Seven Six, has also invested in various cryptocurrency projects. He has previously considered collaborating with Solana $177 blockchain to establish a decentralized social media network.
