Users in developing economies with mobile devices and those hindered by outdated hardware can benefit from a new smartphone application running on Solana’s blockchain network and decentralized cloud infrastructure. APhone, launched on March 7th within the Solana ecosystem, is a web-based virtual smartphone that provides users access to various Web3 and traditional applications.
Significant Step from the APhone Team
APhone’s ecosystem development and growth leader Jennifer Booze explained the details of the service in correspondence after the launch. APhone looks and feels like an Android smartphone and can operate on Android or Apple devices. Booze clarified that instead of replacing a device’s operating system, it functions like an operating system with its interface, features, and core technology:
“It is a cloud smartphone environment that allows users to run Web3 applications seamlessly through decentralized cloud computing without needing local hardware upgrades.”
The team sees the mobile device as a way to familiarize users with Web3 applications and protocols previously blocked by hardware limitations of devices. APhone’s goal is to overcome the hardware limits of older smartphone models by operating on Aethir, a decentralized cloud-based graphics processing unit (GPU) computing infrastructure. APhone’s interface and applications run on a cloud service that enables users to access applications and games that their physical device couldn’t handle.
Noteworthy Comments on the Subject
Booze stated that with the widespread adoption of mobile internet and the increasing prevalence of smartphones in emerging markets, the virtual device’s primary use case is to provide access to the broader Web3 ecosystem:
“APhone leverages Aethir’s decentralized cloud technology to enable these users to experience advanced Web3 applications, NFTs, DeFi platforms, blockchain games, and to operate multiple smartphones on a single device.”
Using the digital alternative to buying a new smartphone will cost users $20 a year. Potential users can purchase an APhone NFT on the Solana blockchain network, which grants access to the virtual device. The device will also provide access to several decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePINs) operating on Solana. Among these networks is Helium, which rewards users for providing network coverage and validating transactions.
