Thirty-nine state banking associations in the United States have united to establish the BankChain Alliance, a consortium aiming to launch a nationwide, industry-owned blockchain network for banks by 2027. This move marks a significant step in efforts to integrate blockchain technology into the core operational infrastructure of US financial institutions.

BankChain Alliance’s Vision and Structure

The BankChain Alliance said on Tuesday that the network will be designed to support tools such as smart payments, tokenized deposits, stablecoins, and automated settlement processes. The group emphasized its focus on interoperability with other blockchain systems and announced that it is in the process of choosing a technology partner for the project.

The participating associations cover thousands of banks across the US. BankChain stated that it will extend invitations to banks nationwide to acquire ownership stakes in the network. However, specific banking institutions that have pledged to join, as well as details on the network’s governance and funding mechanisms, were not disclosed.

The BankChain Alliance represents a coordinated effort among US state banking associations, which are trade groups representing banks within their respective states, to bring blockchain-based solutions into regulated banking operations for both large and small lenders.

BankChain Alliance aims to build a nationwide blockchain platform supporting smart payments, stablecoins, and tokenized deposits, with an inclusive ownership model for US banks.

Growing Bank-Led Blockchain Networks

Since late 2025, multiple US bank-led blockchain initiatives have emerged, bringing together major, regional, and community lenders to construct shared infrastructures for moving deposits and payments onchain within the regulated sector. BankChain joins these efforts as one of the largest state-led alliances to date.

In June 2026, The Clearing House, a payments company owned by large commercial banks, unveiled an onchain money project backed by major institutions including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citi, BNY, and Wells Fargo. That initiative focuses on clearing and settling tokenized deposits between participating banks and linking blockchain activity with existing payment infrastructure.

Regional banks have also pursued initiatives such as Cari, a blockchain network developed by Huntington, First Horizon, M&T Bank, KeyBank, and Old National, which released its minimum viable product in March. By July, more than 30 banks had joined the network.

Community banks are exploring blockchain through the DTX Consortium, established by the Independent Bankers Association of Texas. In June, IBAT disclosed that more than 50 banks had joined as the group prepared a pilot for tokenized deposits.

Tokenized deposits, unlike stablecoins created by independent issuers, represent direct claims on individual banks and are treated as standard commercial bank money. This structure gives banks an opportunity to offer programmable financial services and instant, around-the-clock transfers while maintaining customer funds on their books.

Mini dictionary: Tokenized deposits, digital representations of deposits held at banks, allow for programmable, fast payments while keeping funds within the regulated banking structure rather than in privately issued stablecoins or cryptocurrencies.

Stablecoin Consortium and Future Developments

June 2026 also saw stablecoin developers announce new consortium models. Open Standard listed over 140 organizations including payments, banking, technology, and crypto companies linked to the upcoming Open USD stablecoin, backed by the US dollar and due to launch by the end of 2026.

The Open USD project aims to offer businesses the ability to mint and redeem tokens without fees and plans to distribute reserve earnings among its participating members.
