XRP dropped 2.2% in the past 24 hours, reversing some of its recent gains after climbing 49.4% over the last seven days. This downturn follows a period of strong performance and comes as the landscape for blockchain-based payment solutions continues to evolve, with traditional financial institutions launching their own services targeting the same market as the XRP Ledger.

Bank innovation changes payments landscape

JPMorgan Chase, a leading American bank, has expanded its Blockchain Deposit Accounts to eight major currencies, including the US dollar, euro, British pound, Australian dollar, Hong Kong dollar, Japanese yen, Chinese yuan, and Singapore dollar. With this system, clients are able to transfer balances and swap supported currencies around the clock, with transactions recorded directly on JPMorgan’s blockchain infrastructure. This approach allows companies holding one currency, such as US dollars, to receive others like Japanese yen without the need to bridge the transaction with another cryptocurrency.

JPMorgan sets the foreign exchange rate, executes the currency exchange, and logs settlements in real time on its proprietary blockchain. This business model is aimed at solving the “pre-funding” problem, where institutions must keep substantial funds parked in advance to facilitate international transactions.

Citigroup, another global banking giant, has also rolled out its 24/7 USD Clearing network, which reaches over 250 banks in more than 40 markets. Citi’s Token Services supports the movement of tokenized commercial-bank deposits using blockchain technology. According to Citigroup, combining its clearing network with the token service enables faster overseas payments with less need for pre-funded accounts.

Some banks are testing Real-Time Liquidity Sharing, enabling payments to process without requiring accounts to be fully pre-funded. While this method’s settlement time—around ninety seconds—is still slower than the three-to-five-second range of the XRP Ledger, businesses may prefer keeping cash within regulated banks over using XRP as an intermediary asset.

Citigroup claims that linking its 24/7 clearing network with blockchain token services allows institutions to make cross-border payments more rapidly, while holding less capital in advance for settlement.

SWIFT takes a different approach

Despite these advancements, a challenge remains: bank-issued digital deposit tokens generally represent liabilities unique to individual banks and are not inherently interoperable across institutions. For example, a tokenized dollar from HSBC is only valid within HSBC’s system, while one from Standard Chartered is confined to that bank’s ecosystem.

SWIFT, the global financial messaging cooperative, is tackling this interoperability issue. On August 19, HSBC and Standard Chartered conducted their first cross-border transaction using the SWIFT blockchain ledger. The banks retained custody of the deposit tokens in their respective systems, while SWIFT facilitated message delivery, reconciled and matched obligations, and calculated payments. Final settlements still took place via established payment channels outside cryptocurrency networks.

Unlike the XRP Ledger, which serves as a universal asset transfer channel via its native cryptocurrency, SWIFT’s model enables communication between separate digital tokens issued by various banks, allowing these to interact despite being based on different blockchains.

This initiative extends beyond the initial pilots. SWIFT has stated that 17 banks across six continents are preparing for live transactions using tokenized deposits on the new platform. HSBC now offers its Tokenized Deposit Service in six markets, supporting the Chinese yuan (CNH), Hong Kong dollar, Singapore dollar, euro, British pound, US dollar, and the UAE dirham.

Mini dictionary: SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) is a cooperative that facilitates global payment messaging between banks, ensuring secure and standardized transaction processing across more than 200 countries.

SWIFT has reported that the new blockchain-based system will allow interoperability for digital deposit tokens between participating banks, without requiring a single shared cryptocurrency.
