Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, has not yet completed its scheduled Luna Classic (LUNC) token burn for November, causing concern within the Terra Classic community. The exchange had consistently carried out LUNC burns on the first of each month since March 2023, but investors are questioning whether the recent high-profile security breach has impacted the process.
Terra Classic’s token burn program stalls
Luna Classic is the original token of the Terra blockchain, which was left behind when Terraform Labs co-founder Do Kwon forked the network in 2022 following its dramatic failure. Kwon was later convicted of fraud and sentenced to 15 years in prison due to his involvement in the $40 billion Terra collapse. Despite this, the Terra Classic network remains operational, supported by a core group of dedicated backers investing time and resources in its survival.
Binance’s LUNC burning initiative began after the Terra Classic community voted in late 2022 to destroy a portion of LUNC from every on-chain transaction. Binance pledged to burn half of its trading fees from LUNC, with monthly burn batches rolling out since March 2023. However, figures from StatsBin indicate that November’s burn has not materialized, raising fresh questions about the continuity of the program.
Investors in the token are divided, with some expressing concern over the interruption and others suggesting that the record-breaking attack on Binance may be the underlying reason for the holdup.
Impact of the Binance hack
On Friday, Binance was targeted in a $6.3 billion hack, which the FBI attributed to TraderTraitor, a cybercriminal collective linked to North Korea and believed responsible for previous attacks such as the Bybit hack. This makes it the largest recorded crypto heist, surpassing the previous Bybit incident where $1.5 billion was stolen.
The exchange has since proceeded to restore services, gradually reopening withdrawals for a wide range of assets, including dozens of Ethereum and Solana tokens. However, the Luna Classic community is questioning whether the LUNC burn remains a high priority for Binance during its recovery operations.
Dawid Skinder, an ecosystem contributor for Terra Classic, emphasized the importance of Binance’s ongoing participation in the LUNC burn campaign. He noted that while operational delays due to the hack are possible, the community hopes the problem is limited to technical issues and not an indication of broader challenges.
“It is an important sign of support and a vital part of the overall burn campaign. It might be that it is just an operational issue after the biggest hack ever. Hopefully that is the case, Terra Classic does not need another problem.”
Prominent community member Pedro, known as Vegas, said he and others are focused on ensuring the security of both LUNC and LUNA assets. He claims Binance is transferring LUNC to a more secure wallet as part of post-hack security maintenance, though Binance has not officially confirmed this process.
Binance previously paused LUNC burns at the end of 2022 after the Terra Classic community voted to re-mint burned tokens as a development fund. The exchange subsequently reduced its burn to 50% of fees and resumed burns in March 2023 once the re-mint measure was scrapped.
Mini dictionary: TraderTraitor, identified by US authorities, is a North Korea-linked cybercrime group known for targeting cryptocurrency platforms with sophisticated hacking techniques. The group has been connected to several major digital asset thefts in recent years.
Economic consequences and community sentiment
Luna Classic’s price has dropped 7.9% during the past week to $0.0000417, according to Decrypt, marking a 99.99% decline from its all-time high of $119.18. Community concerns center not only on the delayed burn, but also on the broader health and prospects of the Terra Classic ecosystem.
| Event | LUNC Price | LUNC Burn Status | Timeframe |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-time high | $119.18 | N/A | Before 2022 |
| Current price | $0.0000417 | Pending (Nov 2026) | November 2026 |
Skinder pointed out the need for improved product offerings, stronger marketing efforts, comprehensive audits, and enhanced protection against quantum computing threats. He remains optimistic about a potential rebound but expresses concern over governance and technical expertise within the network.
Skinder explained that while other blockchains may be in a stronger position, Terra Classic stands out for its narrative of revival and the existence of over 20 stablecoins awaiting restoration. He observed that despite low odds, the potential reward and historical significance attract ongoing support.
